BROADSHEETS GOOD FRIDAY MATCHES COVERAGE ZERO

Recommended Posts

I know that our coverage in the broadsheets (Times/Telegraph/Guardian) has shrunk over the last few years however having gone online this morning seems that todays coverage is ZERO:(

2 matches yesterday with crowds of over 20000 and nearly 25000 it seems that we have sunk to a new low.

Back in the day the likes of John Huxley and Andy Whitlam had excellent contacts with the London desks and the RFL even arranged an annual London press dinner at the Ivy every year.

OK I realise that we are now in the digital age however a good presence in the nations flagship broadsheets is still extremely important.

Is any effort being made or have we just given up?

Paul

Disagree many RL fans amongst broadsheet readers

What is your theory on why they are not serving content up that these many readers want?

Who reads physical newspapers these days? No disrespect to those who do and those who do who are rugby league fans but they’re not the crowd we’re looking to convert or attract to the sport moving forwards.

Good point, social media presence is much more important these days.

Broadsheets hurt my arms. But they do have websites. The term "broadsheet" does persist, though, even though your screen is no wider.

And the age range of people who are likely to have a paid subscription to a broadsheet newspaper online are likely to be within the age range we’re not really targeting (or should be targeting) as the audience we’d like.

No, not true, we haven't sunk anywhere the legacy media have and continue to do so.

Not only have they long ago given up on the idea that England is one country they buried the truth alongside any pretention they had to a conscience.

Sadly they're bedfellows sports have to have, happily they're not long for this world even in a virtual format.

RL is just colateral damage here.

How can we expect to get national coverage when RL is a regional sport? And many RL supporters are happy for it to remain a regional sport.

You can't have things your own way, you want national coverage then steps must be taken to become a nationwide sport.

Unfortunately this is karma and it's only going to get worse in the years to come due to the small minded nature of people running clubs lukd Keighley and Featherstone

It's funny how some journalists moan when evening games kick off late for the paper deadlines, when these were done much earlier!

Yet the same newspapers can publish a report on an evening kick off soccer match that goes into extra time!

There is something in that argument TD but mostly it's the argument that only sports deemed certain things are worth covering.

TGG isn't ignored because it's regional that's essentially an excuse for bias. The bias doesn't only affect RL it influences all aspects of life. The simple fact is that if RL was played in public schools the something like 90% of journalists and editors who come from that minute section of the public would cover it. To blame RL for being regional it ignore the history of everything.

Because their coverage of RL is based on their prejudices not anything real.

On a more optimistic note both the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday digital editions had match reports and live action pictures of all four Superleague matches on Friday and Saturday. Additionally an full page article on Lewis Dodd on Friday’s Mail preview of the Wigan/Saints derby.

The Mail take their position as the top UK online newspaper seriously, which is why you find all sorts of content on the website that wouldn't get within a mile of the print edition.
