Newcastle Knights confirm Armstrong is coming to Leigh for 2025

Some signing that once confirmed at our end.

Need a quality Centre (or two)

Such as Hardacker

I will be eternally thankful to Hull for taking Hardacre and our other 'great' centre Chamberlain and on reflection Asiata who may have stayed and sat in the stand for another very long period taking up cap and overseas space, saying that I hope he makes a full recovery and plays well, not so happy to lose Ollie Holmes though, when we got him from Wire I said 'WHAT' but must say he has played admirably for Leigh.

Excellent news, a current first team young NRL player who is by all reports playing exceptionally well.

Armstrong is a great signing by Leigh. It is not too often that a young NRL player comes at this stage of his career when he is far from done in the NRL. I know he only got a shot this year with Pongas injury but he would certainly get a NRL spot somewhere next year if he wanted.

The genuine astonishment by many Aussies that he is coming to SL says it all. Must be a big contract but either way well done Leigh, these are the players we want in SL.

Yeah it's a signing I'd long given up on once he started scoring tries for Newcastle in the NRL, to get him on a 3 year deal is outstanding. He gives us several things we've been sorely lacking too in a genuine run threat from fullback, express pace and also some additional height to target high kicks, the latter of which we've sorely missed since having Mcdonald and Ferguson in 2022

Hopefully he will be as efficient as other relatively unknowns that Mr Lam has brought over, i.e Bevan French, Jai Field, Tom Amone, Kai O'Donnell and Sam Stone.

3rd choice full back for the Knights after Ponga and Sharpe.

A good player but a NSW Cup signing, not an NRL signing.

Irrespective with the meagre number of games he has played in the NRL and the form he has shown, he is a dead cert for being a top star over here.

Not sure what this means.

I am just pointing out that when Ponga is fit, the club captain and current Dally M player of the year is the first choice full back.

In NSW Cup, Fletcher Sharpe is first choice full back and so Armstrong plays on the wing when they are both available.

Leigh have signed a good young NSW Cup player who can play full back or wing who did well when he had a chance in the NRL... but he is behind Ponga and Sharpe for the Knights.

I mean, I'm not saying anything controversial here, I hope he works out well in Super League.

Yes, I think you are right.  He will do well I hope.

NRL media rate him higher than other FB's who came over and named French, Field and Dufty when making that statement. We lack pace and have just found a hell of a lot in a young man with the best in front of him. We will be announcing a strike back row and a centre next

Sure, I hope he does well.  You don't have to get so defensive about his playing career to date, it is what it is... a 23 year old who has played 7 NRL games.  He is a good NSW Cup player.

Surely you've been watching the game long enough to be careful of making statements like that Harry! 😆

I hope you're right, the more quality in the comp the better, but I don't think there are any guarantees. Similarly unknowns can come and do very well. I often make the point in discussions like this but one of my favourite Wire players in the SL era was Brent Grose who was pretty much unknown.

Some players just embrace the British game and thrive.

He certainly has the assets to thrive. It's an exciting prospect to be going into 2025 with a spine of Armstrong, Moylan, Lam and Ipape.

Paul Carrige played over 60 NRL games and Mark Corvo probably over 90 NRL games and often top the worse import ever rankings.

Hastings and Croft both discarded

Just saying.......

.

Yup, could make huge lists of players under these categories.

And Hastings was right to be discarded by the NRL, have you watched him since he returned there.

I mean, he's signed from an NRL club, having played NRL games after being promoted into their top 30 man squad. So I think it's fair to describe it as an NRL signing. If I'm being ultra petty then it's a Super League (hopefully!) signing from NRL.

Odd thing to be hung up about though.

There are of course no guarantees. There will no doubt be weaknesses in his game that become apparent with regular games, and sometimes players just don't settle when travelling the other side of the world. Adrian Lam said that Moylan would need a couple of months to get used to being over here, so we will need to be patient with Armstrong.

But it's still a pretty exciting signing.
