They are certainly doing a good job of getting a competitive squad which is something new teams always struggle with. I wouldn't get carried away about attendances or league position. If they can cut their cloth based on revenue and be competitive home and away next season it would be a tremendous start.

Has anyone questioned....?

Yes.

I believe that the consensus was that they'll being known as the Puddings, right? 😁

Though if Warrington can be Wire, perhaps Goole could be Hoist.

Has anyone questioned that we have two Vikings in pro RL now?

Wouldn't it make sense to not do this / have rules to avoid it?

Goole Ghouls ?

They're not even the only Vikings at that ground.

Signing 4 players from the team that got relegated from NCL Premier this year is certainly a strategy.

Iirc this was the very first pedantic point made on the forum when the RFL’s decision was announced.  Or maybe it was when the Hull Daily Mail announced Goole’s new coach and captain for league one before the other two bidding teams had even been told the outcome.

In defence of Goole, at least Vikings has some relevance to their location, unlike Leopards / Broncos / Tigers / Dragons / Giants / Rhinos / Panthers / Lions / Cougars / Hornets, and more solidly in the Danelaw than Widnes. On the other hand, Hoist sounds a lot better.

It's surprising the amount of people that don't realize that Goole were already called Goole Vikings, and had been established since 2018.

I think most people on here did realise they just expected part of their elevation to League 1 would include having to rename at least their 'senior' league side.

Yep, I previously said out of the 3 teams that applied they had most chance of success. Any club setting up outside the heartlands is at a massive disadvantage from day 1.

Swinton's name the Lions derives from the club's formation when meetings were held at the White Lion pub in Swinton.

It's the same old game of musical chairs every year with players released by M62 clubs usually popping up at another one 10 miles down the road

All the clubs away from the M62 are at a disadvantage, not just the expansion ones.

They have to factor in travel time and expenses to attract players and it comes out of the same share of funds their rivals get.

It's a very limited pool of players and the amateur game just doesn't produce like it used to do.

Surprised they’ve been allowed to retain the Vikings moniker. Surely wouldn’t have been hard for RFL to say ‘you’re in but you need a unique moniker’.  Also surprised Widnes didn’t object.

Just a personal opinion, but if I were Widnes I’d have wanted to protect my IP within RL and not dilute it.

I remember when Leeds Akademiks had to change their name because a US brand objected (clothing from memory) … also their paths would not have have crossed but they didn’t want any risk to their brand. Now clearly different but same principle. I also think having unique monikers helps distinguish teams in the league.

But also understand that it is maybe a minor issue. Just don’t understand why it wouldn’t have been fixed.

It's been mentioned. We've had two Rovers for over a century.  There have been other instances too.

Toponymy

edit

The most usual explanation for the origin of the name Widnes is that it comes from the Danish words vid, meaning wide, and noese, meaning nose and that it refers to the promontory projecting into the River Mersey. However, the Widnes promontory is not particularly wide and another possible explanation is the first part derives from the Danish ved, meaning a wood and possibly referring to a tree-covered promontory. Earlier spellings of the name have been Vidnes, Wydnes and Wydness.[6]

Early history

edit

There is little evidence of any early human occupation of the area although a flint arrowhead was discovered at Pex Hill, suggesting there was some human presence in the Stone Age. Pex Hill is a disused quarry, located to the north of the town.[6] Roman roads by-passed the area but some Roman coins were found where the Ditton railway station stands today.[7] In the 9th century Vikings invaded the country and Widnes was at the extreme south of the Danelaw

Just saying.😀
