Its like choosing between Germany or Argentina for the world cup

Why? I can just about understand why people don t like Argentina for football and/or political reasons but why Germany? They have never cheated England in any soccer match.

If the objection to Germany is on political terms may I point out that anyone who voted for the National Socialists  in the twenties or thirties would be well over a hundred years oid now.

My objection to the German national team is borne almost entirely out of jealousy. In pretty much any big match, the buggers beat us.

I have massive respect for them, but beating them is always great. Funnily enough though, it's something of a one-sided rivalry. They, rightly, look at the likes of Italy and France. i.e. teams who have won stuff in the last 50 years.

I could engage with you in a lengthy discussion on the historical rivalry between Britain/England and Germany. A rivalry that is arguably only eclipsed in length and intesity by that between England and France (for England) or France and Germany (for Germany). Indeed I could draw parallels in the rivalry from a historical period and today to demonstrate the relevance of the often complex relationship between these two great powers.

I could also suggest to you that almost no national rivalry is associated solely with a single sporting team - the Russia/America rivalry was not borne out of the basket ball and ice hockey teams at the olympics specifically. Neither is the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand reliant purely on sport, or England and Australia. I could follow on and give examples throughout history of where sporting matches have played out cultural and historical rivalries on a pitch.

Indeed I could suggest that support or lack of support for any nation/team/club is completely irrational and therefore such irrationality is to be expected with teams one does not want to win.

Or I could remind you it was a tongue in cheek comment and quote Basil Fawlty "you have absolutely no sense of humour do you!"

I know I would prefer the latter...

You can get to Wembley Park, which is at the start of Wembley way on the either the Jubilee line (grey/silver) or the Metropolitan line (purple), the metropolitan line is the quickest as there are no stops after Finchley Road, if I were you I'd get on before the Baker Street stop which is an interchange and very busy. Alternatively you can go up to Wembley central on the Bakerloo line(brown) but it can take a while. It's easiest to buy a day card if you don't have an oyster or contactless debit.

Have a great day

As well as the Underground there is also the Overground train from London Marylebone (situated between Baker Street & Edgware Road tube stations) to Wembley with Chiltern Railways

On Saturday there are trains every 10 - 15 mins and on average its a 10 minute journey

Getting excited now.

I think who wins could depend on which Hull FC turns up.

If it's the same ambitious FC side that smacked Leeds' bottoms, it's Hull's. Wigan's defence has been leaky this year and could struggle.

If Hull play too conservatively, it could play into Wigan's hands as they love a good arm wrestle.

Also in Hull's favour is they've have had a week off (sorry, Huddersfield fans) and they look settled and well prepared.

Gareth Ellis' last cup game ratchets up Hull's motivation another notch.

So in summary, it's Wigan :D

Which friends would that be then? :nono:

You're not the bloody groundsman preparing for any eventuality are you? In any case, the game's been played at Wembley, not Huddersfield.

Perhaps your missing post was summat to do with the website weirdness mate.

ditto if it comes to a leigh/hullkr playoff game all north west fans will be leigh fans for the day.

lets all pray that it never comes to that farce, no way any team should suffer that fate.

I must admit to preferring extra time than a replay - I would be disappointed lifting the Challenge Cup at Huddersfield or Bolton for example.

I'd prefer a minimum of 10 mins extra time though.

For anyone coming via Birmingham, there are now direct trains from Moor Street to Wembley Stadium at 11.14, 11.34 and 12.14 and two others at 10.55 and 11.57 involving a change at Banbury. There are direct trains going back at 17.09, .15,  and .43 then 18.09 and .15. As usual with the railways on a Bank Holiday weekend they warn that Birmingham Snow Hill is shut so all Chiltern Rail services into London will be going via Moor Street and to expect the services to be 'busy' (railspeak for overcrowded, you'll get a seat if you're lucky!).

Out of interest, is Cumberland Club still going?

It is indeed but it was nearly evacuated last year after a bad gas leak.

We were actually in there at the time of this happening, playing pool after a great session in said Whalebone including plenty of real ale and numerous pickled eggs....

I payed snooker there, in the leagues.  The snooker table was coated with oil and grease with a lot of the regulars working in engineering and trucks.  John Spence, not the actual pro snooker player, was a regular.

I am guessing everyone gave you a wide berth when you leant over to take a shot.

The poll with this thread is really close.  Golden point extra time could happen.  Farcical, painful, exhausting viewing but not dull if that happens?

We're in the entertainment business and it would be fantastic.

i certainly wouldn't want to miss the time it happens, but therefore I hope it doesn't happen this weekend as I'm missing my second in a row after about 6 straight.

shouldve been done ages ago

SKOLARS’ FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS LOOKS TO BE BEST YET!

23RD AUGUST 2017

With Friday Night Lights being this very week we’re going to walk you through the day’s events to give you a flavour of what’s in store at New River come Friday. The event has become a real highlight for fans across London & the South as well as fans travelling down to watch the Challenge Cup final on the Saturday at Wembley & looking for a great night out the day before.

The day starts at 1pm with a three way U15s tournament featuring Hemel Stags, Elmbridge Eagles and a French touring team. A great opportunity to see the bright future of rugby league in the south east against a talented French outfit.Climbing the age ranks at 3pm where a London select U17s team take on their French equivalents. Again, a great opportunity to see the talented future of London rugby league.

“These youth games are an intrinsic part of the day for us, this is a real opportunity to make the most of the rugby league spotlight being on London and to give our young players a share of the limelight.” Jac Davies, Skolars General Manager.

At the opposite end of the spectrum will be our annual masters showcase between the London and Down South (LaDS) vs Political Animals at 4pm. The Political Animals feature politicians from across the political spectrum, both past and present.

The main event will feature the London Skolars taking on the South Wales Ironmen in their League 1 Shield fixture. The Skolars, having won their last 5 matches on the bounce will be looking to go a point clear at the top of the ladder.

“It’s a big night for the club as a whole and we want fans of other clubs to come down to New River to see what we’re all about” Jermaine Coleman, Skolars Head Coach.

Skolars will be looking to make it three wins from three against the south Walians this year, having already secured wins in the league and League 1 Cup at the start of the season.

It is set to be the Skolars largest event since hosting the Toronto Wolfpack in their season opener. The Londoners will however be looking to be on the winning side in front of a packed out home crowd.

London Skolars RL v South Wales Ironmen RLKingstone Press League 116/07/2017.

As well as all the rugby, 4 games in all, the Skolars will also host its largest ever real-ale festival. In honour of the following day’s Challenge Cup Final, Skolars and their pouring partners Caveman Brewery have sourced beers from Wigan and Hull, as well as a selection of beers from the midlands, London and the South East.

Plenty of food and entertainment frame this unique event. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to make the most of the event. The site will host three bars; the clubhouse, fan park and stand bars. Our wide selection of ales will be available across the three sites.

Tickets are still available from here. The New River stadium is a short walk from Wood Green tube station, which is itself a short hop from London city centre on the Piccadilly line. It’s also a short hop from Wembley for any spectators staying in that area for Saturday’s Final.
