Shouldn't he call them "Saint" or "St. Helen"

It seems to be a thing to refer to the collective ''panther''. I don't quite get it, but I've noticed that those associated with the club do use it.

Special word to Konny as well. Not the most agile or athletic but he's got the heart of a lion. I feared for him a bit against younger, more athletic players but he put in a really solid shift.

I'm still buzzing after that amazing morning.

I think today also showed yet again what a difference Roby would have made if he'd have made himself available for England at the World Cup. His quick pass and organisation is just on a different level.

Add Walmsley too with his go forward and Lomax with Williams in the halves and Welsby at full back and its a much stronger team (granted Wane may not have done that last bit).

It’s heart breaking that Roby didn’t see the World Cup as important enough to put his hand up to play. Not that he owes us anything, just that, as today showed he’s 10 times better than the alternatives.

I can hardly see a negative comment.  It is overwhelmingly positive stuff praising the game and Saints.

By my rough reckoning Saints have won nearly 30 trophies in the Super League era (and been runner up a lot of other times). Their success today is another step in a 25 year domination of the game (somewhat disguised for an amazing period by Leeds’ wonderful ability to win Grand Finals having been less than stellar until September). I would hesitate to suggest that this is the culmination, but it is a high point among many, and it would not surprise me if they go back and do it again next year. And this in a salary capped sport.

They are Bayern Munich versus the rest of the German league, but on a level playing field. They are better than everyone else from front to back office, and have put together a team which will be as good if not better for the next 5 years. You could make a strong case for every England qualified Saints player being selected for their country.

Everyone else is failing, not just short term, but over decades.

I used to think that it would be a good thing if the NRL bought SL, as they could instil professionalism across the competition, but increasingly I am wondering whether Saints should actually be asked to share their wisdom and good practice with the rest of the league. It might take a decade, but how good would it be to watch a Super League in which Saints’ standards are the norm. Of course, it’s not necessarily in Saints’ best interests, and they can carry on laughing while Wigan sign another never was, or put another 12 stone prop on a long term contract, but just imagine what that league would look like…

You could make an argument that he’s “10 times better than the alternatives” partly due to his decision not to lace up for England and the contribution to Saints may be lessened due to England duty.

The tackle on Crichton effectively won the game, though Dodd will get accolades for the drop goal. It was a perfectly executed tackle.

I feared that an edge of Hopoate and Hurrell may have been vulnerable and they were tested but did enough today.

Yes exactly. The world cup is very different as players have to play 6 games in a short period of time. It is very different to playing a one off game.

He obviously felt he wasn't able to do this at his age.

Just watched on catch-up. WOW what a result. Big shout out for the fans who went there to cheer their team. Well done st Helens. I did notice that the Aussie crowd went home before the presentation, typical really, sore sore losers with their mullets.

He wouldn't have had to play all 6 though.  At least two of the games would have been won by any 17 players selected by England.

I think Roby is by far the best player of his generation and respect his decision but he would have been the captain of his country playing in a home World Cup.  As someone who would have loved to have been anywhere near good enough to achieve that, I still can't understand why he didn't want to.

Realistically he would have only had to play 3 or 4 at most and would have had as much rest as the week to week schedule of Super League.

Next year it should be in England - St Helens went to Australia and took it off them, if the NRL clubs want it back they should come to England and try and take it

I really do apologise for this but the pedant in me just can't help it.

Or France.

Its a very long time since I last wanted Saints to win a game.

First time ever for me to be wishing them well but thought they were gritty in defence and strong in attack and thoroughly deserved the win. Only real notable poor play was Lussick running and then passing wide to Lomax in the first DG attempt rather than swing it back to Welsby or Dodd who were both central and back in perfect position.

Always good to see Phil Gould made to eat his words from an arrogant prediction.

Penrith were largely pedestrian in attack but this was forced by excellent defensive discipline and line speed.

They looked far lesser a threat without their star second rowers punching holes out wide and not bringing in a decent hooker to replace Koroisau looked a very complacent and costly decision.

Welsby and Dodd will be in high demand and Roby was simply immense once again and the game will miss him hugely when he eventually hangs up the boots.

like i said without 4 or 5  players most NRL teams look very ordinary - without koroisau and kikau  and a couple of injuries /suspensions  as well - the panthers wont be winning owt this time round

I just can't help it but can I say St Helens will be most likely winners again as they are guaranteed to qualify. 🙂

True, it would have been 5 maximum.
