31 July - International RL D-Day

Recommended Posts

Forty-20 says the next World Cup will be announced during the IRL meeting in Singapore on 31 July.

Shaun Wane has let something slip about it in being in New Zealand.

Also rumoured are Samoa touring here in 2024, and an Ashes series after the World Cup. There may also be an announcement where the next two World Cups will take place.

Goodie. It's been literally weeks since we had a series of announcements with no details.

Samoa (2023), Tonga (2024), World Cup in New Zealand (2025) and then an Ashes series (2026) would be a good announcement. If it happens, it’ll be subject to change and almost certainly won’t have happened in that order in 2026.

Correct. Tonga are touring this year 😉

I’d take that. However I fear the more likely scenario is a home friendly versus France at Warrington rather than a Samoan tour in 2024, no World Cup in 2025, and a home friendly against the Exiles (also at Warrington) rather than an Ashes tour in 2026.

I'll belive an Ashes series when the Aussie's run onto the park for the first test, and not until that point actually happens

So International Rugby League, that can't afford to have a European championship, involving largely part time players, needs a meeting in Singapore?

Really?

Maybe they've expressed an interest in co-hosting the 2029 world cup with Armenia.

It’s a vital meeting where they’ll be finalising the forthcoming 10 year international calendar. Oh, sorry how many times have we heard that?

Stopover spot for flights between Australia/NZ and Britain I suppose

To be fair, it's not the sort of thing that can be done on Zoom. If it was we'd all be saying it was tinpot. So if we accept they have to meet somewhere, why not Singapore? Is there anywhere they could meet without people thinking it was a p*** taking jolly?

In all seriousness I have no issue with them meeting there, it should have value by having such meetings. Just frustrating how little tangible is generated from these to date. We’ve been promised the 10 year calendar on multiple occasions now

If I were the IRL I would take any profit -assuming there was a profit - from the last WC and plonk it on a number of their choice at the roulette wheel at Marina Bay Sands casino.  The outcome will decide whether we have a viable international calendar or not !

That kind of comment says a lot about the people involved.

The only thing we can be certain of after an announcement of a rugby league international schedule is that it will be things that don’t happen. So it least it gets us a little closer to the truth through deduction.

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

Even at 60/1 you’re still only getting £30 back

I too would have no issue with the location of the meeting …..if I felt there was going to be any tangible benefit whatsoever for the game.

As it stands, it looks like nothing more than an expensive talking shop and nothing will change. For all the real action that will result from this meeting, I would wager that, actually, it could be done on Zoom. And if that looks tinpot, then it would be very appropriate for international RL.

Where do you suggest? Your house?
