Salford throw Wigan match

Not on here, you only joined the forum in January 😉 😂

Someone called Hull Kingston Bronco who disappeared on the exact same day in January did post this mind you:

Squads exist for a reason. Hull KR run a full first team squad, a full reserves squad, and a full Academy programme at the owners' expense. Not every club in this league does that. It has enabled us to make some tactical changes in the week before a cup final, in an era of 10-day HIA stand downs for example. Then even doing so, we still competed in a reserve team match, in a season when plenty of reserves matches have been cancelled for lack of players. I think the latter is more damaging to the integrity of the comp, allowing some clubs to focus all their resources on the first team to compete with clubs like mine whilst the rest of their organisation runs on the smell of an oily rag.

Responsible clubs that invest in resilience should be able to reap the benefits. Let's be honest, the only way it impacts the comp is by making Rovers Top 6 spot more at risk because we now have a negative points differential - Wigan would have been strong favourites to win the game in any conditions.

This would not have ever been a full length episode of Columbo.

Rubbish, but entirely understandable, and unless there are rules brought in to stop it, like they have in football, there are likely to be examples of it most seasons.

Always seems to be Wigan that benefit though? KR before last year’s final. Wire before this year’s and now this.

One of the laws of the game states you must put out your strongest available team.

This is clouded though by having a squad system, and being easily covered by 'injuries', especially at this time of the season.

I think the RFL/SL gave up trying to police it years ago.

So we've gone from what was potentially a blockbuster last Friday night of the regular season with two matches played to decide the LLS Winners, to a damp squib with a game on Thursday against a Salford 2nd team.

Maybe we do get treated exactly as we deserve.

I wonder whether Wigan would have changed their squad had they known they were playing Salford’s reserves? In any case, winning the LLS in a year when we have won the WCC and Challenge Cup is a breath taking achievement.

The LLS decider was a couple of weeks back and we lost out in a tight affair. Its disappointing, but c'est la vie!

Salford have a quality core of players and they need them fit and firing if they are to make an impact in the playoffs. I can see Rowley's rationale with resting them on a tight turnaround.

We did something similar before last years Challenge Cup and it blew up in our faces, so it doesn't always work.

You may have, but I’d bet you didn’t use language like ‘Hull KR throw Wigan match’.

As for me, it didn’t bother me when Hull KR did it last year(certainly didn’t help them in the cup final), and doesn’t particularly bother me now. There are pros and cons for a club to consider, reduce the risk of injuries and bans or opt to go in battle hardened. Salford have a tiny squad with very little depth outside their best 17 so I don’t blame them holding them back for a game they were unlikely to win anyway.

I would have accepted that Hull KR were throwing the match, yes, because that’s precisely what they did. Of course they did, to pretend anything else is just sophistry. And as I’ve said, I didn’t agree with it.

Now where do you have to go? No hypocrisy here pal, I call it as I see it and I don’t like this

Precisely. This sort of behaviour literally devalues the comp. Financially. How do people think Sky are feeling now?

This is an awful decision by Salford, supporters are turning up , paying their hard earned cash and watching a deliberately weakened team. It absolutely stinks. I support a team in the Championship and I would be incensed if they did that to out speccies, we could not of course, do anything about the opposition doing that. No wonder the game is dying.

Sky getting what they deserve to an extent for the ridiculous decision to bring the game forward on 6-days' notice.

It results in the season petering out, and I don't know that I'll even bother watching the match now. I certainly won't be into it as I was for KR against Wigan.

It is probably fair to say that that was the match for the LLS and the Top 3 are accepting of their positions.

Not a good look for the sport, but Salford must be confident of winning either contest the following week. I don't think it's great to go into the play-offs on the back of a potentially big loss.

Why should Salford risk injuries and suspensions to key players when they have been shafted by a short turnaround with minimal notice? It's a game that Salford would probably have lost anyway. Other teams have done it to keep their best players fit for bigger games ahead. Why should Salford be any different?

Yes, Sky changing it on 6-days' notice should be the far greater controversy.

I don't think we would tbh. It would means lads sitting out for 3 weeks between Leeds last week and the semi final and that is too long IMO.

I expect we'll manage the minutes of Thompson, Havard and Ellis and go full strength. I suppose there is still the chance we see Hill, Walters, Eckersley etc from the 21 man squad but I'd say it's unlikely.

Do they have to pay to use their stadium? Probably more money for them if they play away,

The gate money gets split 3 ways for play-offs. So do you want a cut of a small home crowd or large away crowd.

Money.

They'll have clearly weighed up the pros and cons and they've made their choice and that is their right to do so. They've earned it through their performances over the rest of the season. It's probably a warning to clubs who want to win the a LLS that you could do with wrapping it up early, when the chance is there because this won't be the last time a side rests players before a big game.

Sad as it seems it probably is that simple at Salford.

Short turnaround, small squad, Salford have earned the right to approach this to which benefits them, if they play Saints away they are very capable of winning there with a fully fit first choice 17, the bigger picture and all that 👍
