They borrowed three Salford players for their first ever game in 2020. They lost 102-14.

There will be an opponent. Probably even some shirts to buy. But there is no real club.

The match is part of a new two-year agreement between the clubs to provide warm weather pre-season camps, as well as supporting the Huracanes grow the sport in Spain and see some Tigers players also feature for the Spanish side.

 

Dean Buchan, chairman of Valencia Huracanes, added: “We are obviously delighted to announce this partnership with Castleford Tigers. It will have a massive effect on rugby league in Spain and hopefully start an exciting new chapter, as we look to grow the game, grow homegrown talent and the Huracanes brand.”

Cas obviously think this will be something long term though.

Couldn't  they just have an exhibition  game with another team from Britain  or France in Spain.  Like the old fashioned  way.

If this is all it is then it's harmless. If this is another diversion that ends up making a mockery of genuine development attempts - just look at how much mental energy, if nothing else, was taken up by Euro XIII - then it becomes problematic.

One of my favourite memories was going over to watch Wire play St Esteve in the South of France in around 2000 when we'd just signed Langer, Nikau and Gee. I think there's a place for these kind of trips, but I wonder whether we'd be better tying in with real French clubs rather than things like Valencia.

Castleford, though, will get an extra 0.25 on the IMG scale for having a sunny break. Unfortunately they will lose 0.75 points for their inability to spell hurricane.
