Hull KR legacy

Recommended Posts

With Hull KR bringing a close to 10 years in Superleague (in dramatic fashion), we have to look at what the club will take away from their time in the top flight:

- on-field success, was OK in the early years, but not much in a while

- Crowds have been decent over their time, though never really grew at all

- stadium has been improved with the building of the new stand behind the goals. Still not a top class stadium though

- players, very poor. They have relied so heavily on Aussie imports in the past 10 years, doing everything they can to stretch the import quota to the max. Hardly any decent British players brought through at all

All in all, I feel the club wasted the opportunities SL has brought in the past decade. Hopefully Leigh make a better go of it than the a Robins did.

A harsh assessment I feel, and presumably it will be particularly galling to get that assessment from someone with a Titans avatar - now there is a story of unfulfilled potential.

Not sure where you've come up with twenty years from: this season was Hull KR's tenth in Super League. During that time they have been consistently competitive, with a number of play-off appearances and a cup final appearance last year. I am genuinely shocked that they have been relegated this year -I saw them thump London the other week and they were excellent. They snatched a point off Warrington - finalist in both major comps - with only 12 men a couple of months ago.

Their crowds at home have been more than respectable and Hull FC will not be the only club to miss their away support next year. Their ground is not state of the art but it is atmospheric and is comfortably Super League standard.

Yes, they have had too many overseas players but they have also brought some excellent players into our league and played a lot of entertaining rugby.

I wish them all the best and hope they bounce back very quickly.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

The players I would like to see be picked up by other clubs are James Greenwood, Shaun Lunt, Thomas Minns & Ian Thornley. i would even take a punt on Kieran Dixon because he has been given a raw deal imo.

Someone should do a Gold coast Titans, Chargers, Sea Gulls, Giants legacy thread.

To be fair HKR bring more to the table than a whole host of other SL clubs.

The only real crime for me is their reliance on overseas players over that 10 year period.

I'd much rather HKR in SL than a number of others.

Will miss Hull KR far more than Salford.

All Salford have brought is a chuffin meglomaniac!  Telly went straight off once his mug came on yesterday.  Maybe next year?

This world was never meant for one as beautiful as me.

Started off with a struggle and managed to stay up,

found they had 6,000 fans who had been hiding for 20 years, built an extension that they didn't really need.

had one season where their fans got a bit dizzy

built a nice new stand

plateaued and have more or less plodded along for the remaining 5/6 years

embarrassed the sport at Wembley.

And that from a Huddersfield fan who have yet to find 6000 fans and finished bottom of the league on more than a few occasions

I think the OP, whilst being a bit harsh, has effectively summed up Hull KR's tenure. Their demise is to a large part self inflicted. For a club that has often been in the shadow of their city neighbours, they really needed to think out of the box and invest more in the setup of the club, youth development, expand their horizons and catchment zone, both player and supporter base. The move to 1 Academy team will no doubt benefit FC more now, with them being able to cherry pick the better players and KR with the leftovers. KR's heavy over reliance on expensive antipodeans, who they've had mixed success with, hasn't proved fruitful.

Will miss the Hull derby, hopefully KR can return stronger

I can only assume that goldcoaster is just trying to be controversial - seeking attention or is an idiot. Hull KR have great support and a perfectly good stadium. Jesus, what do you want man - go to Oxford, Hemel, Sheffield (if you can find it?)or Queensway to watch North Wales Crusaders. All the clubs are doing their best with the resources available to them. Did you just have nothing to do and thought "Oh, I know, I will put a meaningless post on RLfans and see who I can upset?

Rovers are not the only club who should have done more on the junior development front.

Is it not true though?

Or because Huddersfield don't get big crowds should i say that Hull KR are a perfect example of how a successful sports club is run?

grow up, Rovers are nothing special, just another average rugby league club like most of our clubs are.

You can't be sustainable long term without junior set up.

You can't be successful short term without junior set up...(young guns waiting in the wings on tuppence waiting for their chance in the sun to outshine the star which also keeps the starsc honest)!

No I just think your one of the sad and bitter rugby league fans of which we have many who prefer to stick the knife into other clubs when they suffer misfortune.

Self inflicted??

Youth development was always restricted to the low number of quality kids playing, that's why they cut to one academy?

As for "catchment zone" look at the map and how isolated Hull is.  Two SL clubs in one city doesn't work as far as resources are concerned. It only worked here because a rich man put money in. It only works in Widnes because they buy lots of antipodeans.

The number of fans and hone grown players our niche game can attract is not endless.

"Think outside  the box" and "expand horizons" are meaningless slogans. Please do explain these??

Relegation isn't misfortune.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

No. its because they didn't win enough games.

I trust Hull KR will continue to build, develop, gain in strength, strive for success with the backing of its many supporters ( including the chippy ones on here) and well wishers, to challenge and ultimately win promotion.  Leigh have done it, so can HKR.

Not at all, i offered my sympathies to Rovers fans last week, even though a lot of them refused to accept it.

I offered my sympathy on saturday afternoon on another forum.

Here, i merely responded to the OP, if you don't agree with it or don't like it then not my fault, it's my opinion, there is no legacy, just as there wouldn't be if half the SL clubs got relegated.

Hull FC had a 10 year headstart on us when it came to attracting young players when we were promoted and now we are sharing the one academy which shows that there is not much talent out there anymore.

On the whole we were competitive. We had a few playoff appearances and the number of times that we were bottom you can count on one hand, but after we finished fourth under Justin Morgan I thought that we would kick on but that was probably when we peaked.

With regards to attendances a Rovers team regularly competing for trophies at the top end of the table has the potential for crowds around the 10k mark. CP wasn't one of the best stadiums in Super League but it was far from the worst.

It's because that team weren't good enough to win the required number of games, Rovers had enough chances to avoid relegation, but blew them all, that's not misfortune or luck, it's a team not being good enough.

They were good enough to finish aboveHuddersfield in the regular season, and good enough to finish above Salford in the god awful middle 8s,but yes they were not quite good enough to win a contrived one off match,so I think I'll stick with my view that they were a touch unlucky.

It wasn't luck that they ended up in a contrived one off match though was it?

After my self-imposed time-out, I've just got my posting rights back (Thanks, JD!). I wanted them back specifically so I could offer my sympathies and best wishes to the many HKR fans on here. When the dust settles, I am sure you will all look forward optimistically and rebuild. Good luck to HKR and I hope to see you back in SL as soon as possible.
