Eddie Stobart.

Eddie Stobart, who has died aged 95, was a Cumbrian agricultural contractor whose name became an icon of the road haulage industry and a source of truck-spotting entertainment for generations of bored car passengers.

We all remember that brief moment when you could see a huge reproduction of a rugby league player on the side of a truck. RIP Eddie.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

I saw a few down in Essex and Hertfordshire. Let us not forget that the only alternative sponsorship offer on the board was £20,000.

Not £20,000 per year.

Not £20,000 per club.

£20,000 for three years of the whole Super League.

A few hundred quid per club.

The Stobart deal was better.

I'd hoped to avoid that issue. More of interest because Stobbie-spotting was all the rage at the time. There were even Corgi -type models, along with Norberts - Norbert Dentressangle.

RIP Eddie Stobart, when young, and not so young to be fair, there was always the bit of excitement to see how many times we’d pass the same name.

Thom Christopher, aged 84. I remember him as Hawk from 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century', but also the somewhat neurotic villain Troxartas in 'Deathstalker & the Warriors from Hell' as riffed by Mystery Science Theater 3000.

He got dealt a $h!t hand, his peace deal between Israel and Egypt was massive and still keeps Egypt from rattling swords with Israel and being a good go between.

Shame other countries didn't follow the lead.

Former goalkeeper Charlie Wright, 86. The Glaswegian, fond of exchanging banter with fans behind his goal, was one of the great characters of Sixties and Seventies football.

Workington signed Wright from Rangers (where he played only in the reserves). After a Reds debut in 1958 (and 136 league and cup appearances for the Cumbria club), his playing career took in Grimsby Town, Charlton Athletic and Bolton Wanderers. After retiring as a player, Wright managed York City and Bolton Wanderers.
