Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there is just 1 pairing of teams with the same moniker in the pro ranks (Widnes and Goole) which sets up the mouth watering potential Viking derby.

I can only think of Barrow and West Wales in recent times but is there any other examples that I'm forgetting?

I guess this was one reason their application was successful. Goole council have secured a significant amount of funding to redevelop the town with several million specifically for regeneration of the stadium.

Good luck Goole! I've been to the ground for football away games, might be worth a trip for RL game as well!

There has been 2 Dragons at the same time (Doncaster then Catalans) and 2 lots of Warriors at the same time (Whitehaven And Wigan). Although not any longer

Goole return to the semi-professional ranks 122 years after the original Goole club resigned from the Northern Union, at the same stadium as well it seems.

Good luck to them.

It would be wonderful to see areas which also had teams in the early days back in rugby league, Penrith, Morecambe, Lancaster, Kendal, Birkenhead, Stockport and Runcorn for example.

Would like to see a community club still running in Goole and maybe a couple of junior clubs in the town. For me, expanding the professional game into new towns and cities needs to ensure that it has a beneficial impact on the community game and results in more junior players and clubs.
If this can be done then adding Goole and other towns and cities from Yorkshire and the NW to the professional ranks could be a good way to expand RL outwards from the heartlands

Goole is tiny, there’s no way it could sustain two more junior clubs, even if there was anyone to run them. I do hope the existing Yorkshire Men’s League division four team carry on though, rather than being disbanded in favour of the new semi pro team.

Maybe not two more junior clubs. Was thinking two in total.
If not then Google Vikings in League 1 with a Yorkshire Men’s League team still running with a full junior section

Was this about expansion or about providing more games in Division Three?

You know the answer. It was literally to ensure the agreed restructure of Championship/League 1 could go ahead.

Don’t think it was about expansion it was just about adding a club to League 1

Not sure that makes sense given the disparate nature of Division Three.

Possibly. But the need to add a team to fit the planned structure was the motivation.

Since when has common sense had anything to do with the decision making at the RFL? In fact it is usually the opposite and if we can shoot ourselves in the foot into the bargain that is a bonus!

We have this pipe dream of expanding the game, when in reality we cannot sustain the present number of clubs, the dream has been there since the Northern Union broke away and we are no further on now than we were then.in reality, sadly. The best kept secret in sport.
