Warrington Wolves rebrand

Recommended Posts

After many years of supporting Warrington I have never, ever heard anyone at the match refer to us as the Wolves. The wolf idea worked to some extent, particularly with the mascot, but it was never going to replace 'The Wire' as the club's real identity.

I occasionally refer to them as Wolves, but generally call the Wire

I've deleted a fair bit of off topic stuff and personal argy bargy from this thread.

If it kicks off again, those involved will find themselves suspended until further notice.

Back on topic, please, and play nicely.

Thanks.

Saints made a similar decision when Eamon McManus took over. In the end they told fans that they would try it for a year or so and the final decision would be made on the financial outcome. Guess it was the right decision as they still pay on Friday night.

It's a difficult one for the board I guess. Fridays offer a better financial outcome (corporate spend particularly for those clubs with new facilities and corporate spaces) while fans prefer Sunday afternoon.

The problem with surveys is that you can only implement those actions that don't hurt you financially, so Warrington fans get the name Wire on their club badge but they don't get to see the team play when they prefer. This could cause resentment.

Personally I'm not over keen on the badge but it's ok and I love the addtion of the strapline.  The club has done a really good job.

I think the name Wolves is only used with the full name ie Warrington Wolves - and when people are using a nickname, it is the Wire. I think that works just fine. I'm happy that we have both.

I just see it like Bolton Wanderers using The Trotters as a nickname.

I agree that including it hopefully appeals to young and old. I like modern approaches, but the nods to our heritage is nice.

I think that does work as I have never heard 'Warrington Wire'. I guess we will still hear 'The Wolves', particularly among the newer fans.

Works out well I guess although a little by luck rather than judgement.

Warrington's official nickname of years past was The Wirepullers, surely that is what should have been added as a nod to their early existence.

When you want modern and striking sports branding, you go to one of these guys and pay what they ask for. Some people will prefer modern looking sports logos, some will dislike them, but this is the standard to be aiming for.

Really?

Does their team coach have three wheels?

Not a fan of the logo, but its one of those logos that i know will grow on me. Like the 7 badge and wire theme. Gots some meaning behind it. Now that you mentioned it alot more clubs need to overhaul their logos. For example Huddersfeild, Bradford, Leeds even Salford (that logo is so wrong)

What i would like to see though is the clubs logo on the right side off the chest and on the left side the original crest or logo on the other side (something diffrerent)

I preferred the old wolf. I never liked the triangle though. Old wolf on new shield would have done well I reckon. I think it just needed an update rather than completely changing.

Not sure why they did this mid season rather than at the end. The club website and the club shirt will have different logos for the rest of the season now. Could be confusing for some.

They'll have to change the seat design in the corner of the HJ now.

yes, agree with that. Would have perhaps launched it as a teaser and perhaps officially launched in october with the new kit.

Until this thread I wasn't aware of the change. But having looked at the new logo I think it looks far better than the triangle one.

All clubs should regularly review their brand and imaging and whether a change is appropriate.

Too be honest Warrington have a great opportunity given the huge growth in the town as in all the new houses since I use to work in the town 30 plus years ago plus new businesses.  Yep, I know a lot of the household inward movement has been from areas more attuned to soccer. Never-the-less I think the club have one of the best opportunities in RL for capturing a new audience, changing its demographics and bringing in fresh commercial revenues.  It never ceases to amaze me how poor their efforts have been to-date. Particular given I've used the hospitality and sponsorship facilities on match-day and have been totally underwhelmed.

Seems they have a fresh approach and good to see that a change in personnel is helping.

It would appear that Roger Draper was extremely disappointed with what he has seen. I think we have many of the basics right, we now need to add the extra bit that makes people come back time and again.

My thoughts pretty much align with yours 100% on the above.

Now they can sell this season's shirts with the new badge in time for the Super 8s ;)

Very good post John.  The recent consultation with fans revealed quite a few areas for the club to work on, including matchday hospitality, catering options and suchlike. As Dave T said, our new chief exec is making all the right noises about the "customer experience" and will no doubt be making some improvements off the field.

If anyone is interested, the initial results of the fans' survey can be seen here, although I suspect some smoke and mirrors have been used with regard to what day people prefer to see home games on!

Thanks for pointing to the fan survey - I found it interesting.

Are you one of the 20 (1% of the 2000+ surveyed would suggest at least 20) that travels via private jet to the game.  Tongue in cheek no doubt those that answered that or can you park the jet in the supermarket car park for more than 2 hours.

Yeah let's be grateful they didn't choose to employ one of the leaders in the field and instead went with an agency with no background in sports branding. Dodged a bullet there.

Have thought the same re Leigh for a while now, has we have one of reached 120 years it could be "Centurions plus 20%" or "Centurions and a Fifth", seriously the name was topical when first originated, but to say it is corny nowadays would'nt be over emphasising.

Leigh were formed in 1878 not 1895. We should never have had the moniker in the first place as we never had it in 1978. I personally dont like it as it has too many syllables and Leigh doesnt have a Roman connection as far as I'm aware

Yeah Mike Ray did the Coventry logo for Tycoon Creative. A really nice modern sports logo..
