Which films have you watched more than once and would watch again

Recommended Posts

I'm going to give Netflix a try.  I don't like romance or romcoms and musicals bore me to death so hit me with your thought provoking, intricate plot, creepy, gritty, gruesome, fast paced, thrillers and films that have really struck you as worthy of a re-watch or stayed with you for sheer brilliance.

In the blink of an eye it could all be taken away.  Be grateful always.

Zulu

Battle of Britain

If you're going down the netflix route give Daredevil and Jessica Jones a try, Marvel superhero stuff but very dark and very well presented. IZombie is a bit of a guilty pleasure, it's a bit Buffy but enjoyable for all that.

I must admit I don't do Netflix I prefer to buy and get something for my cash. A solid goto many times DVD is the French 2000 filmThe Crimson Rivers with Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel. It ticks all the boxes you specify. Also equally French the period whodunnit Brotherhood of the Wolf. Don't know if these are on NF though.

I agree with all of that. Even the wife has given up complaining that I watch Zulu every time it's on.

I'm a sucker for repeat showings of Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction. Also The Italian Job (original) and Get Carter (original) that were both butchered by Hollywood remakes. In the right mood (slightly depressed) I will watch Blade Runner even though it doesn't cheer me up, it kind of reinforces the message that life's limited, even if you're a homicidal robot.

Goodfellas is 25 years ago and Pulp Fiction is 22. Can you believe that?

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

This is my favourite film and I can watch it again and again.

I'd second that recommendation. 'Hero' has the visual appeal of a painting, and you have the combination of actors doing martial arts and martial artists doing straight acting. Now, that's normally a recipe for disaster, but everyone aces their roles here. Chen Daoming centres an action-packed story with a performance that is mostly stillness - a bold move. The colour-coding of each section of the film is just dreamlike.

A few off-beat favourites of mine - not always great films, but they have a special something:

The City of lost Children (get the subtitled version, because the dubbing isn't very good). A society of steampunk cyborgs are stealing the orphans from a mysterious city. Ron Perlman finds himself looking after a little girl who wants to rescue her brother. Add in a mysterious diver, trained flea assassins, several incompetent clones and a sentient brain in a fishtank. And no, it isn't a madcap comedy.

Dark City. This is just plain odd, but effective. Hard to describe without spoilers, but it proves that Alex 'Gods of Egypt' Proyas does have talent. And Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous.

Local Hero. Bill Forsyth's best.

Society. Clean-cut 'Baywatch' star Billy Warlock in a very sick and twisted black comedy. SFX from a guy with the professional name Screaming Mad George. Oh, and Devin DeVasquez too. You'll understand when you see her. ;)

District 9. Completely nuts and a bit of a mess that loses its way a couple of times, but well worth a watch.

The Studio Ghibli productions of Hayao Miyazaki. Some are better than others, but there's barely a dud anywhere. Try 'Spirited away', 'Porco Rosso', 'Howl's moving Castle' or 'Princess Mononoke' for a start. His colleague Isao Takahata's work isn't as good overall, but 'Grave of the Fireflies' packs a powerful emotional hit.

Dodgeball and Cross of Iron

Vince Vaughn has underwhelmed so many times, and Ben Stiller's presence is usually a kitemark of celluloid excrement... but Dodgeball is actually all right. It is stupid, very stupid, but it does raise enough laughs for me.

The Warriors

I have genuinely seen this film well into the 100's of times. Can recite it word for word as well much to the wifes annoyance.

It's also on Netflix so if you haven't previously seen it then give it a watch.

I know its not a movie but some of Netflix series are really great.

I've recently been blown away by Stranger Things

and that's before I mention Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Sense8 (not for everyone!) and if you love anime The 7 Deadly Sins.

How could I forget Sense8. Possibly the best series on Netflix.

Don't watch it with your children or parents though.

So true... probably the most original series I've seen in a few years! You'll never be able to watch Doctor Who episodes with Martha Jones in the same way again!

and honestly... iZombie is a guilty pleasure of mine too!
