He was the best in his day . Those Sunday lunchtime interviews were forensic and really probing . Not fun for anyone on the other seat

We could do with someone as relentless and focussed as him these days.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

RIP Maurice Bamford.  There is a thread on the main page, but should still be recognised here too.

I'm very sad to hear this, although he looked very ill last time I saw him.

Maurice was a fund of wonderful stories about Rugby League.

And he wasn't a bad coach.

Was he good? What did he win? Not much, if anything. He was GB coach because no-one else wanted the job, and coached a good GB side, against a great Australia side.

My father in law died last month.

Dementia took many things from him, but the essence of the man was there until the end.

Isn’t it the convention on here that if you can’t say something nice say nothing?

I think the saying goes "if you can't say something nice, go on-line".

He was very innovative and especially good at coaching underdogs.

I remember a particular game he coached for Dewsbury in a Challenge Cup tie at St Helens. Dewsbury drew (8-8 possibly?) when everyone expected a heavy defeat.  In those days surprises especially away were few.

On the radio afterwards he explained his coaching methods for the game. It stuck with me what he said and I am sure other coaches copied his methods.

Maurice Bamford started the revival at Halifax which led to the great team of the mid 80s.

His signings of players like Blacker and Loxton laid that foundation. So yeah, he could coach a bit. Always had time for the fans too, especially the young kids.

I just read that now.  Very sad.

It's been a sad year for football accidents.
