I'm primarily a jazz fan so nearly all my favourite music is instrumental. There are a few non-jazz gems though. Vini Reilly proving that sometimes, less is more.

Albatross.

Whenever I feel a need to relax and calm down I play Albatross in my head. With an image of a seabird riding a thermal I can feel my pulse and my blood pressure falling.

Guys please

A good friend of our family, John Fletcher, played the tuba on the original 'Star Wars' soundtrack.

But if you want it a little more upbeat, Maynard Ferguson will oblige.

I used to have this 7" single.

Here's the guy once hailed by his peers as "the world's greatest unknown guitarist" having a little fun.

Edgar Winter on the OGWT. Uploaded by someone who didn't care enough to check the spelling of Edgar's surname.

From the era when the Keytar was "a thing".

Focus: Hocus Pocus especially live, insane😎

The OGWT performance was pretty out there, but Thijs van Leer goes full turbo-nutter-bonkers in this version. But, crucially, is it an instrumental? He makes mouth noises, but there are no words (known to humans). Dilemma!

Cozy , ' Dance with the devil '

I know a bloke who once sold Cozy Powell some curtains. It is a really, thoroughly uninteresting story.

Thijs reminded me of a cross between a young farmer and I think it was Grahame out of the Grumbleweeds. Guitarist Jan Ackerman was extraordinary too, I had a couple of his solo albums back in the day, if it had string's he could play it, and such a contrast to most lead guitarists in manner, too much 'Dutch coffee' maybe but him and van Leer used to have massive arguments before they parted ways. Arrogant Dutchmen, who'd ever belive it!

I always thought the Beach Boys' Let's go away for a while from Pet Sounds took some beating; very romantic!  Not sure how many of the Beach Boys actually feature on it, other than Brian Wilson, of course.

I like the unpretentiously cheerful intro music for some cricket broadcasts; I think it is probably performed by Booker T & the MGs, but cannot recall what it is called.

From a much earlier era, it is hard to beat the emotional intensity of John Dowland's Lachrimae, or Seaven Teares figured in Seaven Passionate Pavans, when played by a consort of viols.  This is real soul music!

Theme from local hero, dire straits, the best version is from alchemy live. A slow introduction of each particular instrument before cascading into unrivalled excellence, God lent his hands to mark knopfler on this one

Soul Limbo. God knows who came up with the idea that a funky R&B instrumental would be ideal for Cricket, but it works.
