When we get promoted, and more locals/businesses get behind us, Newquay Airport is only an hour away.

Can you fly there direct from Keighley though? They can’t be expected to travel all the way to Leeds/Bradford airport.

Or arrange a taxi from NQY to Penryn.

I think we may be able to arrange Luxury Coach travel when we get promoted from NQY, although all the ship that teams take with them may take you over your baggage allowance.

Money matters. Arguably every expansion attempt has worked quite well whilst the money has been there to fund it. Newcastle are going great, Celtic Crusaders did great with many Welsh players coming through until Samuels pulled the funding, Toronto got great crowds and I have no doubt in time the Canadian development would have come.

Great posting as usual.

But don't forget that this also applies to M62 clubs. Wealthy Benefactors walk away and such as Widnes then go in a downward spiral. That tends to not be as damaging if a decent loyal fanbase remains and other parties want to take up some level of investment.  That's more likely in the north.

The north is where there's a player pool as well, away from the M62 Rugby Union generally has things sewn up. If any geographical expansion club wants a blueprint try London Broncos who generally have managed to maintain the club by having someone who will shovel the money in and isn't bothered by whether there's any fans or not, but does recognise the need to develop players and has a long(ish)  record of doing so now.

The Celtic Crusaders club could have been pretty big by now if wealthy private ownership had continued and the other advantage there was RL was not new to south wales. So the question for Cornwall is who exactly is bankrolling them, to what extent and for how long is their commitment??

Of all the failed expansion attempts I think South Wales is the biggest miss, a successful pro club there really could have given the game a massive boost, both in terms of fans and player production, even more so than Catalans have.

There could have been a successful pro club in South Wales when SL began, complete with established Welsh pro players to draw crowds, but that would have needed it to be in SL and have other clubs release the established Welsh pro players for them.  We all know that would never have flown and they'd have been made to build from the bottom up without much help from the League.

It could’ve been done….

This is an extract from the programme, Chorley Magpies v South Wales, July 1996. Div 2.

It looks like the application for SL was successful. Passed by the RFL and endorsed by Maurice Lindsay.

What went wrong? Another missed opportunity??

Pretty sure that Clive Griffiths made mention of this in one of those excellent League Express interviews. They even had a major sponsor willing to plough money in, this money was lost when they ended up with a lower division side.

I agree that Wales has been one big opportunity missed after another. I can only hope that one of the Welsh Clubs builds slowly and solidly into a side that can challenge, a little like Newcastle appear to have done, it looks like North Wales may now do this in Colwyn Bay.

I also remember reading that Ebbw Vale wanted to join the Northern Union but RFL officials wouldn’t even meet them to discuss it. What a coup that could have been, if more clubs had followed.

Worth reading this page. There were enough clubs, including Ebbw Vale, to run a Welsh League for a number of years.

Can't be done in a day by plane.

First  ' northern ' opposition game seems to be against Rochdale. in May.

Flying saturday returning monday ( ko 13.00  sunday ) costs  £118 return at present on Skyscanner ..

Long weekend break is the only realistic option for flying travelling fans.

£500  out of the wallet  if you travel that way ?
