The sport is also, almost, ahead of its time in that the sport is ideal for social media. Big hits, great sidesteps, pure speed, acrobatic tries, 1 play clips. Our direct competitor in this arena does not have as much of that (it is trying to develop it with rule changes but it is behind).  NFL etc are in a similar position and exploit it.

Thats before we get to the actual humans.

People will seek out things that interest them. If they're not interested in the NFL, why would they bother watching clips of big hits on social media?

I'm guessing the number of new fans coming into a sport through social media is little more than a rounding error.

My 'suggestions' that appear to watch is just Rugby League and Cricket, most probably born out of me not being interested in other sports, I can't ever remember looking for any of the Stateside sports or indeed Football be that from these shores or anywhere else on the planet, that being the case these sports I mention are immensely more popular than little Rugby League, so why would people with little to no interest seek it out?

An important thing to remember is that this is all a numbers game.

There are likely hundreds of thousands of people in the UK who have attended a live RL game in their lifetime who won't be planning to go to Rd1 of SL/Champ/L1.

There are millions of other people in the UK who have watched RL on TV in their life who aren't planning on watching Leigh v Wigan on that first night.

These are some of your warm populations that you are speaking to.

We then have millions of casual sports fans in the UK who are happy to watch whatever is on live with little prejudice.

The more we have a presence, the more we are relevant to people the more chance we have of converting some of these people to become engaged with RL.

People do need to stop looking at everything through their personal lense. Remember, people are not all like you. We on here are engaged with the sport and are catered for.

If that were true, we'd never grow. If people don't know about rugby league, then that statement means they never will. On YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, things go £millions viral for no other apparent reason than people excecise some curiosity, prompted by shares, likes etc,

To see the power of social media just take a look at the effect Ilona Maher is having at Bristol Bears.
I would say she’s a slightly above average player, but her social media presence has put bums on seats in a big way.
Whether we like it or not, the new generation of fans seem to be hooked more on personality than skill.
Using social media to create characters and open up the behind the scenes activities of players and clubs is the new way to create interest and eyes on the product, which will lead to more money coming in to the game by way of spectators and sponsors.

The day I go out of my way to navigate “social media” to find a union player is the day I would like to be taken to the glue factory.

Understand entirely. Me too.

However......😀

That's not quite how it works, in my view.  Youngsters, that is, the under 25s  or so, have developed the mental agility through practice, to wizz round social media at warp speed, masters of rapid two- handed phone keyboarding (i think that still holds sway over voice -typing) .

In my view, the RFL and the clubs need to devote time to producing and posting short, sharp clips of youngsters, by youngsters, for youngsters, in youngsteeeeze language, down and dirty wiv da yoof, for sharing and liking. Not the same stuff already done for websites and Facebook but tailored for TikTok, Threads, etc etc. young fast-talking  pro  players, 10 to 20 sec clips, showing skills etc.

Is anyone on this board even in that demographic?

By which I mean, would we know if they were or weren't doing it and/or were doing it well or not?

You've  got a point there .....

....however, if we WERE doing it, someone would be on here in an instant moaning about the waste of time and money etc etc ..😀😀😀

You left uni years ago so it's a sad reflection on all of us.

Good to know, though!

Actually, I'm probably the closest to the demographic I described earlier....

....as I was sitting next to granddaughter #4 , aged 13, when I wrote it 😀

Really good news, I think the HJ is a great facility, perfect for us, but the way we've used it has been a bit lacking. The screen was absolutely horrible too, so.its great they are sorting that.

Of course, in the same way as I am not going to seek out clips of "influencers" telling me what to buy, and yet they make multiple millions of whatever currency seems to be the vogue at the moment.. BUT what you are doing is catching those that may be interested but at the moment getting their "fix" from another sport/source etc.

As mentioned it not all about getting new fans its about giving current fans more content keeping them invested in the sport/club and the virtuous circle that is.

Its also really cheap and easy to do so why not do it?!?

Not sure where to put this but I read today that the BBC could lose the 6 Nations.

No doubt they would still fawn over it and have it as the first item on the evening news, but maybe they will have a surplus to spend on some other sort of rugby content.

When I saw an article title on BBC sport suggest saying we are in a golden age of the six nations I assumed the BBC were trying to justify paying over the odds for it, but as for a gap in the schedule leading to money for Rugby League and IMG points for extra viewers, they barely show club rugby when they get it for free (and we have no international calendar to speak of)

Perhaps put it in the cross-code forum.

EDIT - I see it is already being discussed there.

I found myself nodding in agreement with this until you said ''... down and dirty wiv da yoof...'' and then my personal cringe-ometer shot off the scale.

It took a huge effort to quote you here, typing despite my whole body writhing and squirming in agonised embarrassment.

Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment but that phrase gives me the willies.

Please have a heart?
