The Hallucinating Goose
In the abscence of any World Cup games tonight I've treated myself to a couple of classic British crime films. I started with Sexy Beast, absolutely legendary performance by Ben Kingsley and a brilliant script. Very funny, very witty. Any film that starts with a boulder almost crushing Ray Winstone and smacking into a swimming pool you know is gonna be good! And finished with what I think is one of the best British films ever made, Mona Lisa. One of the tensest, most atmospheric and darkest crime films there is. Such a gripping film, the mood of it just completely drawing you in. Michael Caine appears in one of his most sinister roles ever.
Rawschach
Bob Hoskins is fantastic in Mona Lisa - hilarious and heartbreaking, so out of his depth. All the cast are great. I watched Mona Lisa a few weeks ago, followed it up with The Long Good Friday

The Hallucinating Goose
Always a shame when great film directors succumb to drink. Spielberg saying he thinks sharks are "mad" at him because of the impact Jaws has had on their image. I can understood the negative impact the image of sharks has had in their population being destroyed by big game hunters and other evil ##### like that but I don't think the sharks themselves actually hold a grudge against you Mr. Spielberg! You know, because they're sharks ard can't comprehend their own existance!

Bedford Roughyed
Everything Everywhere All At One. Stunning movie. Absurd, sweet, heartfelt, funny. Also to see such a comeback for Ke Huy Quan, outstanding. With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

gingerjon
If you have access to Mubi, then the short Icelandic film, "Nest" is ridiculously lovely. Three children build and play in and around a treehouse over the course of a year. The whole thing filmed by a static camera on 35mm film. (Caveats that it might turn off people with a "Euro arthouse cinema but no nudity to counteract that" phobia) Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. (Terry Pratchett)
soulboy
A few weeks ago I watched Billy Liar on DVD . It’s a hoot and quite sad at the same time . A superb film. Last film I watched at the pictures was ‘ Till ‘, which was deeply unpleasant. Edited January 31 by soulboy
Gerrumonside ref
Three Colours White by Krzysztof Kieślowski is a 1990s Euro classic to me. Saw it at Manchester’s now defunct Cornerhouse cinema. A bittersweet dark comedy with plenty of twists and turns. Edited January 31 by Gerrumonside ref
Adelaide Tiger
Last night at random I watched the film ‘Bull’ on Netflix. Strewth, it was a bit lively!! Not really come across Neil Maskell before but he gave a cracking performance and I always enjoy watching David Hayman. An enjoyable 90 minutes or so with an ending that was totally unpredictable - well for me it was!
Bedfordshire Bronco
The Martian with Matt Dillon Missed it originally ....enjoyed most of it but fast forward the last third a bit (predictable).....growing potatoes on Mars... Who'd have thought?
Phil
Banshees of Innisheeran just abso bloody lutely fantastic, what’s it about? The nature of male friendship? The claustrophobic life on a small island? The tragedy of unrequited love? All of the above and more I think it’s going to be a bit marmite but I loved it 2 "Freedom without socialism is privilege and injustice, socialism without freedom is slavery and brutality" - Mikhail Bakunin
Futtocks
The Thief and the Cobbler (re-cobbled edition). An animated adventure started in the 1960s and plagued by delays for decades. It was never properly finished, but badly-edited versions (with different titles) were released by Allied and Miramax over the years. Most of the creators and cast are dead now, and a genuinely complete release isn't going to happen. However, there's a "re-cobbled" fan-edit available that retains the original vision and fills in the gaps with sketch-work. And some of the artistic style is genuinely astonishing. Take a look... Bedford Roughyed
All Quiet on the Western Front - Brutal, numbing and ultimately a tragedy. Hard to say I loved it, because of the subject, but it was very good. Not one for a romantic night in. How many novels have had three movie adaptations (1930, 1979 & 2022) that were as good as this? It can't be very common, and I'm not talking about different stories with only a title character in common, such as Dracula. 1 "We are easily breakable, by illness or falling, or a million other ways of leaving this earthly life. Futtocks
Tomorrow (8/2/2023) evening on Film4 at 9pm - The Lighthouse. Starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson who's come a LONG way from his sparkly vampire pin-up days. Apart from saying it is in B&W and a 4:3 ratio, I'm not preparing anyone for this. I first watched it with virtually zero pre-knowledge, and that's very much the best way. "We are easily breakable, by illness or falling, or a million other ways of leaving this earthly life.
