EagleEyePie
1 hour ago, Damien said: I do think there is a large element of truth in what you say and some of it seems pure laziness. Some sponsors have simply been Lenegan pushing his products which isn't particularly great for the club. I always compliment Wakefield for their Asus sponsorship. If Wakefield can get a sponsor like that (and I don't mean to dig at Wakefield, quite the opposite, its a criticism of my own club) then Wigan certainly should be able to with their size, history and being the most well known club in the UK. It really should be an easy sell. Which sponsors have been Lenagan pushing his own products? The only time I can think of that happening was when we had Animalates as a shirt sponsor, but that was immediately after Applicado FS went bust, and it wasn't sponsorship as much as free advertising because there was nothing else to put there and was only for a handful of games. Asus is a good sponsor as long as they are paying good money to do so. If they aren't then the sponsorship isn't great but it's very rare we get any indication of what individual sponsors are paying. Besides, a cryptocurrency based fan platform with sponsorship deals with one of the biggest football leagues in the world, the current F1 constructors champions and several European football clubs isn't your stereotypical rugby league sponsor. Unfortunately Wigan were one of many who fell for what they were purported to be selling. Edited January 26 by EagleEyePie

Also it's never a great sign when your owner's company is the sponsor as it indicates they struggled to find anyone else. I see your "company owned by owner" and raise you just putting the owners name on the shirt or the owner starting a company that doesnt actually do any business just to put the name on the shirt!

A client of one of the agencies that I used to work with was a main sponsor of Wigan. When their 12 month contract ended, they had no intention of renewing because they just didn't feel that they were getting enough value from the deal, or the club. They later told me that Wigan practically gave them the second year as they were that desperate after failing to find a replacement.

WN83
New Wigan Sponsor announced as Open Exchange Inc, some tech firm from the USA, with offices in London, Hong Kong and the US. I can't say I've heard of them and if they're going to be a good sponsor, here for the long term etc, who knows? It's just nice to get it sorted after the mess with Iconiq. I do wonder if the Channel 4 deal continues what impact that will have on the type of sponsors SL teams get. 2 I was born to run a club like this. I was thinking that too, though it’s only 10 games so surely not that relevant to sponsors. I can’t imagine why an American tech firm would sponsor Wigan. Yakstorm
Open Exchange is a video comms platform designed for the financial sector who are trying to build their UK presence after expanding their contracts with the London Stock Exchange. They have revenues over USD100m annually and are growing quickly, so not a bad pick up for Wigan. It looks like this is their first sponsorship as well. 1 PACIFIQUE TREIZE: Join the team by registering as a fan today at pacifique13.com

Agree that for clubs, it is unlikely to have a dramatic impact, however at the League level, Super League should be able to either drive more value out of their existing partners and/or sell more of the many unsold sponsorship assets they have based upon the increased reach. 3 PACIFIQUE TREIZE: Join the team by registering as a fan today at pacifique13.com

But I suppose the Iqoniq situation was a bit mad at the time. The problem is that they created this false narrative about making it a customer choice etc. It wasn't, it was a main sponsor issue.
