2024 attendance thread

Good to see Trinity making progress.

Higher attendances that Hudds, Salford and London this season and with very few away fans (though Bulls did bring a few).

Good attendances but they are smashing part time teams, how many would be there if they were losing to these teams and how many will still be there if they are struggling in Super League again soon?

It's easy to jump on and off a winning bandwagon, harder to keep it going during the hard times like some Trin fans managed to do.

It's not just that though is it? It's been the whole feelgood factor with the takeover, new stand and plans. That optimism and excitement all started before they had even played a game this season.

True, but it helps to see a team smashing others, Wakey fans won't care if it is students/milkmen or builders, the true judge of their new found support will be when they're back in Super League and not smashing their opponents every weekend.

I assume all relegated SL clubs increased their attendance after relegation?

No. I managed to put this together from some stats I have kicking around a spreadsheet.

Club Yr Ch Yr SL C’ship SL Drop
Toulouse 2023 2022 3,252 4,970 -34.6%
Widnes 2019 2018 4,322 4,624 -6.5%
Leigh 2018 2017 3,539 6,301 -43.8%
Hull KR 2017 2016 7,429 7,611 -2.4%

Probably a couple of things happening at once at Wakefield.

Most importantly, they've created a feelgood factor with the sense of a fresh start at the renovated ground and a decent team to back it up.

Secondly, the Championship is a bit of a Yorkshire League. So the loss of Super League away support is mitigated by half their home games being local derbies of some variety, including against many teams they won't have played very much in years (hence novelty factor).

It's to the club's credit and I hope this little period will win them 1,500+ permanent new fans.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

I think this has to be seen as broadly positive, with every game now on TV?

The average attendance is 1.1% down, pretty negligible but we have to go the full season for the proper picture, in that has there been the more attractive fixtures/ or less attractive fixtures played up to now, and also the Sky deal is £5M less per annum than previous, but has that been offset by the BBC and streaming payments?

No idea tbh, but are all relegated super league clubs loaded with money and a much more talented squad allowing them to smash part time teams?

Don't get me wrong for the sport it's great that any club can suddenly gain 3,000 new fans but as i said the test of that new support will be when they ARE back in Super League and AREN'T smashing teams every week.

Is this support supporting a winning team with a feelgood factor or are they going to support the club when times are no doubt going to be harder than this again?

Personally i hope they do stick around as any new fasn to our sport are welcome, Wakey are doing good things at the moment, it's just a shame their supporters didn't fancy helping them out during their last few years of struggle.

But they have loads of cash, the stadium's sorted and will bring in loads of revenue, why do you think they won't be at the top end of SL when they go up?  I'm not sure I understand your negativity at all in Wakey's case.  I can see them comfortably at Leigh/Cas levels of support in SL for the foreseeable future.

It's just a bit bizarre to suggest that winning against second-tier teams in the second-tier is enough to get extra fans through the gates. Most SL clubs when relegated tend to keep a chunk of players and walk through the lower league on return to SL. I don't recall any of them increasing their support whilst doing so.

Huddersfield did this in 2002, probably in greater fashion. Did they crowds increase the 3-4k they were getting in SL in 2001?

There's a hell of a lot more going on at Wakefield for them to get that increase and very little of it is to do with them simply beating teams in the lower league.

Yes it's ridiculous. Extra fans don't come just because you're winning, the reality is that the Championship is a lower-quality league and a harder sell. Indeed winning comfortably is historically worse for attendance growth that winning close games, indeed it's worse than losing close games (uncertainty creates the excitement that people enjoy).

Wakey are clearly doing lots more right than just "winning matches".

No negativity, i've actually praised the work done at Wakey since relegation, my point is that while it looks good now, as a sport we need to hope these people are also happy to tag along if and when large victories are not a given and stay watching if and when Wakey fail to improve as expected when they return to Super League.

Any club who manages to gain 4,000 new fans in the space of a few months needs commending.

Up until last week, these were the SL standings for attendance figures. The first London listing is compared with Wakefield. The second (below Average) is compared with last year in the Championship. There are a few estimates in the 2023 London figure as with Hull KR in 2023 and 2024.

Warrington is a disappointment in particular but London was expected.

  Clubs 2024 2023 %
1 Wigan 14,289 12,497 14.3%
2 Leeds 13,877 13,796 0.6%
3 St Helens 12,622 12,783 -1.3%
4 Hull FC 12,088 12,348 -2.1%
5 Hull KR 10,192 8,793 15.9%
6 Warrington 9,479 10,890 -13.0%
7 Catalans 9,317 9,062 2.8%
8 Leigh 8,512 7,239 17.6%
9 Castleford 8,191 7,172 14.2%
10 Huddersfield 5,360 5,244 2.2%
11 Salford 5,345 5,296 0.9%
12 London 3,467 4,319 -19.7%
  Average 9,151 9,253 -1.1%
London 3,467 1,085 219.5%

daryl powell and the club over the last 2 years killed a lot of enthusiam, i know a few people that just gave up off the back of perceived mismanagement, they weren't convinced by the burgess appointment, i myself only got a membership on the very last day of early bird sales, was well on the fence after 30 odd years of regular disappointment.

up until playing wigan this weekend, no one had really brought a big away following, apart from the dragons ( we had quid a kid in the away stand and got something like 12k)

Wakefield have been crying out for investment for years and the lack of investment in the team last year did lead to a lack of enthusiasm from the fans.

I think their is a lot to be positive about at Wakefield the development off the pitch as well as some good signings, this will inevitably lead to better crowd figures

Wakefield can see the improvements both Hull KR and Leigh have had recently and see that their is no reason why they can't achieve the same and challenge for a top six place and in the hunt for silverware.

Super league looks a lot tougher competition than any other seasons gone bye. If Hull fc can sort themselves out next year and Wakefield get promoted that top six is going to be a very tough battle for all teams.

but this is nonsense, there's zero reason to say they won't succeed in SL

Also how many tv viewers have there been in total so far compared to last year as well as views on YouTube etc? If the average crowd is similar to last year but more people have watched on TV and more views on social media then that’s got to be a positive

They’ve already signed Johnstone and McMeeken for next year which will create a buzz and help them be competitive. I’m sure they’ll add a few more signings to those two. Castleford, Leeds, Hull/Hull KR, Wigan, Saints and Warrington at home should also draw big crowds. I’m sure they’ll post an increase in crowds next year.

What will the capacity be in SL?

Is it fans gained or that the stadium had a reduced capacity last year due to the build. I remember wakey getting 6-8k averages not that long ago , that plus a better match day experience with the new stand AND some good signings like Jerry etc

It's probably also a lot of existing fans that previously only went to occasional matches or didn't want to watch a losing side. I doubt they're all 'new' fans.

A lot of SL fans will have a complete shock when coming to Bell Vue again next season (hopefully).

Last time in SL we had no east stand at all, reduced capacity, a team that wasn’t close to the cap by a distance and run on a tight budget.

The club is truly unrecogniseable. As a number of fans rightly say it’s far more than winning against championship clubs. The new owner is very driven and the below are just a few changes since relegation:

1. New east stand - it’s fantastic inside and outside. Has all modern facilities and has been nicely kitted out inside and out. Dressing rooms have since been done after to a high spec because the owner wasn’t happy at the finish amongst other investments like projectors, vending facilities and more in the fans foyer area. Light years away from what was before.

2. Top spec dugouts - not part of the east stand plans that are the better than any across rugby league at and stadium I suspect. People may laugh but it’s professional for home and away players.

3. Players lounge - full refurb on second floor of south stand boxes. Fully modernised area with pool tables, darts, table tennis, coffee machines, large tv screens, sofas and eating area!

4. 2 x full time (yes two!) professional chefs - players are fully provided for at the club with meals, nutrition as part of the plan.

5. New coaching set up - experienced SL coach. Two young promising assistants. A brand new exclusive recruitment manager and the England physio along with top quality nutritionist all brought into the club. It’s better than we’ve ever had and the players look super fit this year.

6. New bars around the ground and small cosmetic improvements.

7. social media - YouTube channel started at about 100 followers after relegation with little updates. We now have a media department! It’s grown to over 3000 + and has regular club, player interviews and all matches etc and is light years ahead and still growing. There’s been improvements in other SM platforms too.

8. New trinity restaurant/sport bar south east to be built and open 7 days a week! Did off season this year.

2 floor restaraunt to operate 7 days a week and generate further income for the club outside match days. You can tell the new owner is a business man and the initial plans look very impressive. Work should start this off season.

I won’t even go into the merchandise which is the best we’ve ever had.

Some players we’ve picked up are absolute beauties too capable of SL especially the forwards. Young, big, fit and aggressive and a lot of growth in them. Rodwell had 4 SL clubs after him (probably Wigan/saints as he’s exactly their type of player). So we’ve rushed to snap him up for 4 years. He’s a special find.

One thing that’s apparent is the Championship is cut adrift from the media. It’s very sad. There’s a lot of decent teams snd strengthening the Lower leagues will ultimately strengthen the sport. Trinity are working very hard to generate their own media.

Being a Trinity fan at the moment is very exciting.

Sounds great and very exciting, even as a non Wakefield fan. I love to see clubs progress and grow like this.
