An owd saying was “ tha don’t know what thas got til it’s gone” Oldham were lucky to get a SL spot next time it will be more valuable and momentum would be huge - Salford swap on stand by?

With their massive 3,000 strong army of fans?  How will SL stadiums ever cope?

Are you talking about Salford or Oldham here?

Feel there will be an appetite for SL and owners to fund it. Great local amateur and junior scene to support the player production also

Excellent.  Just another small, poor northern town added to the mix.  Won’t move the dial will it, shuffling the deckchairs on the titanic.

Have you ever considered a career in motivational speaking?

130 year anniversary this year, started by small northern towns and carried on in that vein, support and rejoice in what we have it is our strength.

I have been involved with this game for 60+ years watched and observed many many attempts to expand the game within these shores and in the main they just keep falling flat on their faces.

Yes there are a few pockets of fans of the game scattered about around the country, but not sufficiently enough in any location to make a sustained viable club.

As for Oldham, the sport is in the DNA of the town if they have success on the field they will prosper off it and go from strength to strength, perhaps you could advise me where else do you see outside of the Northern Belt that has the prospects that Oldham presently enjoys?

It was good to see the rapport between the Wigan board and the Oldham board on Sunday. Shaun Wane there too. All I understand we’re very impressed with the facilities and set up. There seems to be a great relationship between the clubs and is great to see.

It’s quite a big town isn’t it? Good amateur scene, seem to have some money behind them and surrounded by large population areas. They could be a big club

Some really great signs coming from Oldham. They've never really been anything of note in the majority of my time following the sport, but have a strong history in the game so it's interesting to see if they can tap into that and are able to sustain a resurgence.

Not fashionable enough for some people though.

Not sure why some people are taking a certain poster seriously with his most recent post.

He's clearly been on a downward trend for the last few months and will find anything negative in any positive.

Big club?  What’s the best average crowd they could bring to SL?  5,000?  Wow.  The small sport gets even smaller, we need a circuit breaker.  Change nothing and nothing changes….

Oldham definitely tick all the boxes to be a potential future SL club. But anyone expecting them to jump two divisions within two seasons really is asking a bit much.

Come on everyone, it must be possible for two things to be true at once. What is happening at Oldham is very pleasing and very exciting; I can't wait to see how they get on in the Championship this year.

However, a decent crowd in a friendly match - with a few from Wigan I suspect - does not make them a Super League club, nor do any blithe claims about them having rugby league in their DNA (incidentally Harry would never accept that a French town has rugby league in its DNA). They have a long, long way to go and they should enjoy the ride.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

I’m not saying to put them straight into SL. I’m saying they have potential. When did I say change nothing??

Give them 3-5 years of consistency and growth.

Providing they spend what they have, they will be fine !

And that’s great……but in 5 years time we still have a SL full of small, deprived northern towns averaging between 7-10,000 fans.  We’re dying, that’s what frustrates me about this forum of about 50 middle aged northern people like myself.  We seem happy that Wakey have got a new stand or Huddersfield have cheap season tickets.  This sport is going to be dead in 20 years if things don’t change radically and soon….

Folk have been saying that for 130 years.

Growth within our traditional market is still growth.

(a) it’s minuscule (b) we don’t even have that.  You honestly don’t think mate that the game is in bigger trouble than ever before?
