I went to see Mary Poppins Returns yesterday - absolutely swam in nostalgia and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it. It's basically a remake with loads of references to its prequel but with modified story line - they've even kept the 1960s animation style and had Dick van Dyke (with a better but imperfect accent) dancing on a table at 80+ years old and Angela Lansbury, who must be about 100 now.

93 ! Incredible , thought she was dead . I remember her on Three Muskateers with Gene Kelly . Like Errol Flynn’s Robin Hood it’s the definitive version

I didn't know Angela Lansbury was Oliver Postgate's cousin. Ivor the Engine related to Mary Poppins?

I didn't know that either.

Maybe, or maybe a gimmick. We'll see. It must be a lot more expensive to create (and difficult to write something coherent) so it has to be worth it from the viewer's perspective. It certainly made me concentrate, and I'm going to try it again and make some different choices to see how it plays out. I went down some "dead end" boring endings and it took me back to some key decision points to have another go.

Tried to watch this last night, and thought it was terrible. Choosing what cereal I am going to eat isn't something that ever needs to be in a 'movie'.

After being sent back a couple of times, you realise that it was pretty linear on top of being incredibly boring. May give it another go at some stage, but after giving it half an hour, I'm not sure whether I should give it any more time.

Intrigued by all the awards hoo-haa, I went to see The Favourite, for which Olivia Colman has been scooping up gongs for her performance as Queen Anne.

It's an odd thing. Billed as a comedy, for some reason, there weren't many laughs in it for me, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

It's one of those period dramas that plays fast and loose with many elements of historical accuracy, but where the storyline has a few grains of truth in it and it made me head for Google afterwards to learn more about the real life characters.

The soundtrack is a bit grating in places and the pace is very slow, but the performances by all the three female leads are genuinely good.

Mrs Shadow and I were talkingabout Olivia Colman and we are firmly of the opinion it's just a matter of time before she's Dame Olivia. She is becoming the "go to" english actor in the style of a younger Judi Dench. Everything she does is good.

Anybody seen Stan & Ollie? I Quite fancy that. My 10yo daughter has seen some of the early films, she's not keen. However, I still find them funny. I Think my daughter has a more sophisticated sense of humour. But she did fine some films scenes amusing. The pie fight was surprisingly amusing to her, as was "Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia", which I had to play 3x.

I love the old B/W Hal Roach comedies, Keaton L&H, & others, Film-making comedy at it's purest.

Just watched Bird Box on Netflix. Started off really well imo but I was disappointed with the ending.

I enjoyed it, including the ending but only because it had been relentlessly miserable up to that point!

Having children has turned me into a complete wuss: the scenes with the children were unbearable. I have a 5 year old and a 3 year old and just couldn't take it!

Watched "Leave No Trace" the other day. From the same director as "Winter's Bone" from a few years back and the two are very similar in feel. I think Mark Kermode (of whom much discussion a while back) made it his film of the year. I don't see enough films to agree or not but it is damn good.

I went to watch this a while back, and thought it was profoundly moving. It moved me as a dad!! My top three films last year, after using Meerkat every week and other visits on top were,

1. Leave no trace.

2. Lucky - with Harry Dean Stanton

3. Three Billboards.

I went to see Stan and Ollie last night at the utterly brilliant Cottage Road cinema in Headingley last night.

Long a L & H fan, I am not ashamed to say I had tears streaming down my face at the end - a truly wonderful film which explores their relationship, particularly at the end of their career. A bonus was the portrayal of the wives. I thought that John C Reilly was the outstanding performer as Ollie!

It would be mine too. It had me moved.

Watched Manchester by the sea the other day for the first time , yet another Oscar film that left me cold . Too long , too much "arty" photography , got tired of Casey Afflecks stuttering muttering character however accurately it was done , thank goodness The Guard was on again Sunday night to cheer me up .

Been to see Stan & Ollie today. It's fantastic.

I aren't sure it wasn't Laurel and Hardy actually in the film. Superb

...and then John C.Reilly Norbited his award chances with the execrable Holmes and Watson.

I saw this last night. Beautifully simple film with very good acting. I particularly enjoyed the recreations of the routines.

Saw that last night too, I thought it was an excellent film, when the DVD is released, I hope they manage to get a copyright on some of their original films to include as extras.
