Former Halifax Town goalkeeper Alex Smith. He was 85. Played in 381 games for the Shaymen.

Smith had the distinction of playing in all 33 of Accrington's 1961-62 games before, in the March, Stanley resigned from the Football League.

Lancaster-born Smith, whose career began at Weymouth in 1959, played also for Bolton and Preston.

Just 5ft 9in, Smith didn't start keeping goal until he was 18, converting from a right-winger.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

Devastating news that's just 2 of an outstanding catalogue the first 2 albums are faultless and even later on could still produce genius. Learned a lot from references in his lyrics and could relate a lot to his working class culture based on bookies and bars. Going to play one of my favourites now Haunted fron the Sid and Nancy film

Who's still around of the megastar recording artists of that particular bit of the past that our generation calls the classic era?

Musical midgets like:

Half the Beatles
Most of the Rolling Stones
Three quarters of Led Zeppelin
Bob Dylan
Joni Mitchell and Neil Young still representing Canada, although The Band have almost entirely gone
Springsteen, if you must
Some Beach Boys, if you absolutely must
The butter salesman from the Sex Pistols
Billy Joel
Elton John
Rod Stewart
Half of The Who
Barbra Streisand
One Bee Gee
Simon & Garfunkel
Antivax embarrassments Van Morrison and Eric "send 'em back" Clapton
Various fragments of Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac & Genesis

Et cetera. Maybe even et Peter Cetera, because Chicago were pretty big for a while.
