Whitehaven in financial trouble

Hate to bring this back up but in the ladies competition Bradford were today playing Leigh and were allowed by the RFL to borrow 4 Leigh players to help them fulfill the fixture. Super League and the Championship are made out to be a serious competition in the ladies game with even some teams in the Championship paying players and with Bradford close to relegation failure to fulfill the fixture could have had serious consequences along with a large fine. Obviously Dewsbury were not going to lend Haven players but what is the difference between this and some amateur players helping out?

Ones semi professional one isn't.

How much is spent on wages in mens championship compared to the women's?

It's a tough competition but this is surely now the frontrunner for most embarrassing post of the year.

Usually accompanied by horizontal sleet.

Indeed. I used to play rugby for counthill school back in the day(only a cockstride from Sheddings). It was ruddy cold up there even in summer 😁.

Why? Haven are told they can borrow players but would be docked points if they did so show up with 14 players causing player welfare concerns where as Bradford could have played with 13 players but are allowed to borrow 4 players from the opposition in a competitive competition that is governed by rules and has big implications for the relegation situation in that league. Both are competitions with paid players and although I get the point about men v women, both are played under the very similar competition rules. Why are the RFL ok with a team borrowing players in once instance(makes a mockery of the competition that is from the opposition) but not in another.

I couldn't tell you but does it matter? Both are competitive leagues with big relegation implications at stake. We can't say on one hand that competition rules are there for a reason and then on another hand so oh its not a pro league so it doesn't matter.

Under no circumstances should teams in the second division of the highest level Northern Hemisphere competition be borrowing opposition players to make a team like under 14s might do.

It's supposed to be a professional competition.

I remember playing for counthill (my senior school) away at a Wigan school,we lost. We got our revenge in the reverse fixture at counthill. We gave them a proper thumping, they couldn't hack the cold weather. Half of their team were nearly in tears by full time. Hypothermia I think they call it🤔. As my dad used to say"you're not cold, you just think you are". Old school was my dad.

Try telling Captains Scott and Oates that!

I believe I am right (but maybe, just maybe I've made it up) that Scott said of Queensbury "in a typical August it is a cold desolate land but on a tempestuous January afternoon with the wind rolling in off the hills and the rain and snow lashing at ones face I would rather be back at the South Pole with the Terra Nova stuck in sheet ice, the dogs starving and my knackers nailed to the tent poll"

759 in attendance for Haven vs York yesterday.

Must be a big concern for Haven only getting that many through the turnstiles when you are in serious financial mess, hope Haven do survive but with that turnout it makes you wonder if the public of Whitehaven want a professional rugby league club at all.

It's nice that they put it to a vote.

If the Joe Public of pretty much any rugby league town or city had to pay the full costs of running a professional rugby league team, there wouldn't be many professional rugby league teams.

Takes me back to a game of RU at High school - we were not allowed to play RL even though we were in Cas - when it was sleeting in down horizontally.  The lad opposite me was in tears most of the first half.  I thought he was a bit soft until we played into the sleet in the second half.  I played most of that half with my head burrowed inside my jersey. Must have looked like the Honey Monsters young lad with my frozen fair hair sticking out of the collar of the jersey.

Salvation arrived at half time when all 15 of us plus a mates Dad - who wasn’t the slimmest of blokes - who always came to watch us somehow managed to huddle underneath a golf brolly he brought.

Double or treble them and hope nobody notices? Oh no that might just be Bradford.

It's not so long since folk were reckoning that attendances were understated to save on VAT.

Like the VATman carries round his collection of TRL Year Books.....

Its one of the loopholes on Kier Starmer's to-do list

"give all VATmen (and women) copies of TRL year books"
