No complaints on the result from me. I'm cold, wet and we lost. Best entertainment for a couple of seasons though, enjoyable and close game. Time will tell given first match of the season for me, but feels like it will be more enjoyable without any pressure on for promotion.6 points

Don't think I have heard a coach or manager in any sport as fair and honest as Matt Peet is in post match interviews.6 points

Congratulations to Saints. It's pretty annoying that conceeding penalties and general ill discipline cost us. Wigan were certainly not good enough on that front and need to do better in games like this. That said I took a lot from that. Despite the ill discipline I think we coped quite easily with Saints and would have won if it wasn't for the red card, which was the correct decision by the way. Saints still don't look like the force of old to me so I saw enough to be confident of in the, hopefully, bigger games to come.6 points

He’s Brilliant. Very humble and very respectful. I don’t compliment Wigan very much being a Leyther (it’s in the blood I’m afraid) but he’s a diamond. I hope his coaching career excels to the pinnacle it deserves.5 points

God, but we need better quality cameras for the video ref.5 points

I pointed out in a game involving Wigan a couple of weeks back that the six agains seemed to be getting dished out unevenly. You replied that it was for breaking the rules and one team (not Wigan) were doing it more, hence the unevenness. So it seems you understand the six again rule when Wigan benefit, but it causes you confusion when they don't.5 points

It certainly was. It was a half hearted disaster from start to finish. When the RFL treats matches as 2nd rate it shouldn't then be shock when RL fans and the general sporting public fo likewise. It was a prime opportunity to make international RL work for England outside NZ and Australia. As importantly it should have been a way to raise badly needed money for the RFL and Tonga too. The RFL should have been pulling out all the stops so that evey nation would be clamouring to come and tour. Instead they did the opposite and it very evidently had the opposite effect too.5 points

Get you with your posh ground ( it's only taken 26 years ) .4 points

Exactly my take on it, great piece of skill, but absolutely no control on the grounding though but it has to be a try cos the ref on the field who wasn't sure if it was a try guessed it might have been a try and the video ref who can see it isn't or shouldn't be a try cannot say that as the ref has already had a guess.....scrap the damn thing altogether!.4 points

I think to "rest" A.J. would be like making him the scapegoat for the Donny defeat and even though he had a poor game by his normal standards and made a couple of bad errors, he certainly wasn't the only one. It was the first league game of the season and if your talking of "resting" a player after that I think you mean dropping him and that wouldn't do his confidence any good at all. If you want to drop players for having a poor game half of last weeks team would be dropped this week. Just a matter of opinion of course.4 points

How long do we wait around after the play the ball before anyone else is allowed to pick it up? 2 mins? 5? Not the defender’s fault that the dummy half wasn’t in place on time4 points
-
Don't think that's right? "If the player marking the tackled player at the play-the-ball dives behind the tackled player in order to drop on the ball as it is heeled, they are guilty of a voluntary tackle and should be penalised. If there is no acting half back it is permissible for a player to dive behind the tackled player and drop on the ball after it has been heeled provided that, unless tackled, they immediately regain his feet."4 points

From a neutral perspective I hope that Hull FC can make this a contest and surprise a few.4 points

Yes, we struggled to contain the Batley pack, but that was the whole point of the game. Our forwards did contain them, then they subdued them, then they dominated them. That's how Rugby League should work. I know it would be naive to think that we could expect that level of passion and conviction every week, but I can't help feeling a bit more optimistic than I did yesterday. For now, thanks to everyone involved in tonight's performance for a fantastic evening and a great memory to store with my many other special Dewsbury moments.3 points

You are talking bollards, the views given to the VR did not show separation, the VR had no evidence to overturn the on-field call. The fact that later shots, not used by the VR showed that he may have lost control, are actually a back up for increased investment in VR technology. If the ref calls try, and the cameras then show he is wrong, without redress to a review, there would be hell to play. VR was brought in because technology (and Sky money) was catching refs out when they gave bad calls based just on their view.3 points

Players gave their all same as at Batley ( 2nd half especially) and at Leigh, enjoying it better then last season already. Players to come back in so bodes well for rest of season. Good game and nice to see a good crowd.3 points

As a "younger person" I think the national side is our best vehicle for getting new younger people involved in the game. The club game, barring a few exceptions, is regardless what anyone says, incredibly parochial. Cas or St Helens for example are massive deal in Castleford or St Helens, but outside of those places there is very limited reach currently, and arguably limited appeal. My particular experience attending England games, mainly in the 2010s, has been one that saw good matches at big stadiums followed by a broad range of fans. The worst England matches have been the ones set up to fail with low expectations and lower returns (see the Tonga tour, CNAS etc.) England RL is a far more attractive brand particularly in the Capital than our club game seems to be. England always get good Crowds in London and for those without club affinity (for the above stated reasons) it offers them a team to get behind. Ideally, I would have England play at least 1 London test each year minimum. The complete neglect shown towards the international game by the past 2 leaders of the RFL, who were blinded on a nostalgia trip of 3 match tours, allowed the budding International game to collapse under their watch, is a travesty.3 points

Any club which takes its junior development seriously will have success, and Wigan and Saints are perfect example's of that, and look how successful Penrith Panthers are because they take junior development seriously and don't just pay lip service to it.3 points

Wigan cannot give so many penalties away and expect to win against the top teams.3 points

I do love Hurrell . He makes mistakes but he always keeps coming back and is likely to do something great as well . Great attitude3 points

Can't argue with Wigan getting two cards. Personally I think the elbow was more deliberate and more dangerous and so I think the colours should have been the other way around.3 points

Talking of rules around the ptb , a lot of players walk off the mark . I’m sure in the dim and distant that was a penalty3 points

Early 90s is when I got hooked. Between 1990-92 GB played 23 full internationals, plus numerous tour games. Plus there seemed to be a consistent calendar, so you knew years in advance when we would be playing an Ashes series (and that it would definitely happen).3 points

It’s a risk on all parts really. Stick £20 on the season ticket to include cup games and don’t get drawn at home and the club are laughing, and the fans have lost out. Stick £20 on the season to include cup games and you get drawn at home three times and the club knackered but the fans have had a great deal. Been various examples of these types of things coming and going in football. Most now to push towards the automated ticket sales (some compulsory, some not) but I’m not aware of that being done in RL.3 points

IMG put the onus on points scoring in other areas rather than on the pitch. Reap what you sow with some clubs. Unfortunately my club thought it could assemble a championship level squad to penny pinch for other areas. After all league standing counts for nothing.3 points

No issues with the broadcasters bigging it up, that’s their job. But it was not that high quality of RL game as is being made out.2 points

Such a shame that a poor crowd eventually dragged themselves down to the match, which was a joy from a Dewsbury point of view. For the first 20 minutes it was all Batley pressure and we could only kick our possession away from poor positions. Then from some clever play down the left by O'Connor we were away for a breakaway try and never really looked back after that. The players lifted themselves and improved by the minute as Batley seemed to fade away. the second half seemed to pass much more quickly than the first, thanks to our dominance. I ended up disappointed to concede that try right at the end as I so wanted to nil them - never mind. I confess to being a little baffled by the team selection and was critical of it before the game. However, each player put a really good shift in against a fair bit of niggle and we left the pitch with our heads held high. A great afternoon's entertainment for those fans who could make it. I hope that Turner's injury isn't serious - he played very well today.2 points

That sending off could cost Wigan the game. Up to then I think we've been pretty comfortable with whatever Saints have thrown at us. That said I'm okay with the red card and do think it was the correct call as Byrne didn't bend his back at all.2 points

Totally agree. Playing Brown at 9 and Charles at 7 isn't going to solve all our problems overnight, but we looked noticeably more organised and purposeful with them there. I just hope Smith sees it too.2 points
-
Looks to me like Smith’s answer is staring him in the face in that half. It’s hard to keep your foot on the gas after you score 6 tries in the first half, so there’s that, but they had much better go-forward and defence in the 2nd half. Charles looks like a player eh.2 points

Hull to kick start their season? They could not kick start a moped. Seriously though you have to feel for those who turn up week after week, all they do is like any other fans pay their money each week and there is more of them than ag most other clubs, but for how long?2 points

As a child, I saw GB lose to Australia in 1978, a drawn home series vs NZ in 1980, a thrashing from the Aussies in 1982, some tv coverage of us losing to both Australia & NZ away in 1984, another drawn home series against NZ in 1985, another beating from the Aussies in 1986. First time I saw us beat the Aussies was 1988, early morning TV, third test in Sydney - Henderson Gill, Mike Gregory, Phil Ford and Martin Offiah. No world cup for most of that period too. So I don't think it was success on the field that formed the attachment for our generation. We had 8000 kids watching England women vs Brazil 18 months ago, one of the most enjoyable RL experiences of my life. Predictably, the RFL appear to have done nothing to follow up on that.2 points

As the NRL succeeds so do its clubs and in turn so does the NRL. Cronulla Sharks AGM was this week. Sharks group annual revenue - $27m despite a closed leagues club and only 50% of corporate space open during the build. No loss. Assets: - $21m bank balance. - additional $5m gift from New York. - Shark Park EMV $40m. - Sharks club EMV $30m. - Sharks @ Kareela (golf course and club) EMV $13m. - Cronulla mall commercial property EMV $8m. Pre-approved for $18m loan for Leagues club fit out when ready. All major sponsors/partners retained for fourth consecutive year. Sharks leagues club likely to open early 2025. No plans to improve stadium without government funding. For anyone who thinks the Sharks are on borrowed time, or would be best moving to Perth or wherever have it very, very wrong.
