Been a while since there was any action on this thread. Anyone posted this already?

Iwas impressed when I first saw that, already knew Parton was a big fan of the song.

however that is topped by this.

It's not as good as the original* but credit for giving it a go

* The version I know best is actually the This Mortal Coil cover anyway ...

I just found out that THIS existed. Blimey!

This is not, repeat not a contender. A limited-edition single produced by the comedian Freddie "Parrot Face" Davies, who was the owner of the Gaytime record label.

This is the best cover version of a Captain Beefheart number I’ve ever heard. It’s from a concert in aid of MS at The Bowery Poetry Club in NY                        The vocals are terrific and being sung by a female gives the song a  completely different vibe.

Having been fortunate to have seen CB’s Magic Band many times I’ve never seen them perform at this level.

Is that Nona Hendryx singing?

It is. She’s a big Beefheart fan and often appears at gigs partnered by ex Magic Band guitarist Gary Lucas.

The reviews by both Beefheart himself and the band for the album that song was on make for fun reading:

I once stayed in a rather eccentric (and lovely) youth hostel in New Zealand. The owners turned up every few days to check it was OK, but it largely operated on an honesty system - you found a bed and put the payment in a box. Entertainment was provided by a record player, but all the records were either Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. Still have fond memories of two German girls giving Trout Mask Replica a spin and recoiling in horror - "zis is not music".

I’d have to agree with them. It’s my least favourite Beefheart album, I much prefer my music to have some semblance of a tune. To my ear TMR, as Eric Morecambe would say has all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order.

What a song to take on, and he nails it.

Nona did a wonderful album with Billy Vera in the Nineties called You have to cry sometime, which shows off more of her old-fashioned Soul style. Worth seeking out some of the tracks on YouTube or wherever.

I've got the 1983 Nona Hendryx track "Keep it Confidential" on a disco comp. Awful 80s production, but I still really like it.

Reckon she'd have been doing backing vocals for Talking Heads around that time.

TMR can be a rewarding listen. Need to be in the right mood.

Notwithstanding, wouldn't hesitate to grab Safe as Milk in a burning building.
