gingerjon Posted May 7, 2024 Posted May 7, 2024 (edited) It's not as good as the original* but credit for giving it a go * The version I know best is actually the This Mortal Coil cover anyway ... Futtocks Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 I just found out that THIS existed. Blimey! Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted. Ralph Waldo Emerson
CanaBull Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 This popped up on my Spotify feed today and made me think of the thread! Mayssa Karaa, White Rabbit. 1

A limited-edition single produced by the comedian Freddie "Parrot Face" Davies, who was the owner of the Gaytime record label. Moose Posted February 4 Posted February 4 This is the best cover version of a Captain Beefheart number I’ve ever heard. It’s from a concert in aid of MS at The Bowery Poetry Club in NY The vocals are terrific and being sung by a female gives the song a completely different vibe. Having been fortunate to have seen CB’s Magic Band many times I’ve never seen them perform at this level. 2

JonM Posted February 5 Posted February 5 The reviews by both Beefheart himself and the band for the album that song was on make for fun reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconditionally_Guaranteed I once stayed in a rather eccentric (and lovely) youth hostel in New Zealand. The owners turned up every few days to check it was OK, but it largely operated on an honesty system - you found a bed and put the payment in a box. Entertainment was provided by a record player, but all the records were either Frank Zappa or Captain Beefheart. Still have fond memories of two German girls giving Trout Mask Replica a spin and recoiling in horror - "zis is not music". 1

It’s my least favourite Beefheart album, I much prefer my music to have some semblance of a tune. To my ear TMR, as Eric Morecambe would say has all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order. 2
OriginalMrC Posted February 5 Posted February 5 From a band that has done some brilliant live covers this is one of their best 2
graveyard johnny Posted February 5 Posted February 5 brilliant cover - even attempting to cover the big 0 takes some doing 3 I know Bono and he knows Ono and she knows Enos phone goes thus
Moose Posted February 5 Posted February 5 First time I’ve heard that cover, you’re right Johnny it’s a cracking version.

Reckon she'd have been doing backing vocals for Talking Heads around that time.

Notwithstanding, wouldn't hesitate to grab Safe as Milk in a burning building.
