Predictions for the future -

Crusaders RL to get a franchise for 2012 onwards -WRONG

Widnes Vikings also to get a franchise - RIGHT

Crusaders RL to do the double over Widnes and finish five places ahead of them -WRONG

Widnes Vikings NOT to dominate rugby league in years to come! STILL TO COME

I promise to pay 10 to the charity of Bomb Jacks choice if Widnes Millionaires finish above the battling underdogs Crusaders RL. I OWE A TENNER!

Still 6 weeks before 1st game.  Looks like they might get a decent 13 but struggle depth wise after that.  No reason they wont be competitive vs WWR,  Midlands and Skolars which bodes well.

I think that would go down quite well with a fairly new audience. If Cornwall managed to compete well and possibly even finish ahead of some of the above teams, I'd argue it was a positive start to the new club.

It provides a platform for further growth the following year.

For me the season is proof of concept.  Long term it rests on the stadium for Cornwall. If that ever got built and they got match day rev I think its viable.

We would then be in absurd situation where we had Leigh Thunder Broncos York Fev and Cornwall all in perfectly sized stadiums with commercial potential locked out of SL to protect this awful 12 team system .

But thats a different story.

York and London are part time and Newcastle got 700 to their season opener, Cornwall haven’t played a game yet and don’t even have 13 players, yet you’d like to see them replace existing SL teams?

Penryn is a perfect fit in terms of it being a small (no doubt affordable) ground situated in the middle of Cornwall's bigger population sizes. In the long term, it would be great to see S4C progress (both for Cornwall RL and others). Although, things have gone quiet on that front recently.

I don't think its the end of the world, or by any means cataclysmic for Cornwall RL if S4C doesn't progress as per the current plans. No doubt it would be good to have a "guaranteed" home for RL in Cornwall. I know of other initiatives at play in Cornwall that could potentially be mutually beneficial too. Albeit, not on the same scale or size of S4C.

Either way, a first season, proof of concept is exactly right. Build from a simple strong base and see where RL goes in Cornwall.

Gary Schofield was laughing and sneering about Cornwall on this week’s Forty 20 Podcast - this has made me much more optimistic about their chances of success.

I find this attitude so sad; a really poor indicator and indictment of our sport. Little if any support is ever given to development areas.

The two chaps from 40/20 and Hunslet’s manager seemed to agree with him too, which I found disappointing.

Hunslet were one of the teams that wanted to cut loose all the teams not in the 3 counties

Gary Schofield is as entitled to an opinion as anyone, but it might be better to avoid 'assertive certainty' until the season has actually begun.

Either way, he is in for a surprise.

I do hope Gary makes it to a game at the Memorial Ground and enjoys eating a bit of 'humble pasty'.

He actually said he wanted a championship conference where they just play the other West Yorkshire teams, loads of derbies, great for them I suppose, but not for anyone else.

Garry Schofield has a job where he is paid to produce controversial opinion pieces designed to get people talking. So that's what he does, he may or may not believe a lot of the stuff he says or writes but he does what he does to get people talking. He has brought us gems such as Paul Rowley should be England coach and Jordan Lilley being the answer to England's half back dilemma in the recent past. His opinions on Cornwall are similar to those he has espoused about other expansion clubs so I wouldn't take them to heart. He performs a similar purpose to that of Phil Clarke on Sky Sports, to make outlandish proclamations designed to garner reaction (and thus clicks/viewers/publicity for the outlet he is broadcasting or writing for). Personally I don't mind reading his column but I wouldn't be likely to agree with much of what he says.

No doubt Cornwall will struggle this year but it’s great they’re signing players from Cornish Rebels Rugby League, makes a mockery of the it’ll never work outside the M62 brigade.
