Flanagan Snr/Jnr - The Answer To A Problem Called Leeds?

Looks like Big Gary's trip down under might not extend beyond one family, if reports in Aus are to be believed.

Shane Flanagan was widely lauded as the best head coach in the NRL not too long ago - it's been a bit of a fall from grace in recent years but undoubtedly still has a lot to offer and you'd assume that given a half decent squad, he could put together a competitive side in a relatively short space of time. In all truth, at this stage I don't think he could make Leeds look any worse.

Kyle Flanagan is an interesting one - was the next big thing 2 years ago and then cast aside, Jackson Hastings style. He's not really had a decent run of starts since joining the Dogs, although has been named to start this week funnily enough. If he does come and has half the impact Hastings had on SL, then he'll be head and shoulders above what Leeds current halves partnership are offering. Overall I think these two really could save Leeds, in every sense.

Thought this was about George F and his soon who are both at the Bulls. Lol.

Same lol

I was thinking how can a veteran hothead hooker and his completely unproven 17 year old son be any kind of "solution" for Leeds

I mean, I know things are bad over at Headingley...but surely not THAT bad

This seems extremely unlikely.

How so? Shane has been looking for a head coach role since his ban was up and Kyle needs to be playing regular. Makes perfect sense to me. No doubt both have longer term ambitions of playing/coaching back in the NRL eventually but if they can steady the ship at Leeds in the meantime then it's win win surely?

I thought it was about Terry Flanagan MBE and his recently retired from playing son Mark.

I don’t think there’s any doubt Shane Flanagan is a very good coach . He took over a struggling outfit at Cronulla and strengthened and improved them . He had his much publicised fall which hit the club hard , but rebuilt them to Premiers as well as some other good finishes . Disclosure of not adhering to the rules of his ban did for him . Ultimately it’s up to whether you are willing to move on from that , say he’s done his time and give him a chance . I’d support that position and as a coach i doubt they could do much better tbh . He comes across well on commentary also . As for Kyle , not convinced but he’s not been handled great either so i’d have no problem with them seeing if he can fullfil his potential . If anyone can help you’d hope his dad could

I disagree , in my opinion what is needed to save RL in Leeds is obvious. However from your user name it seems to me you can't 'see the wood for the trees'

Leeds needs a strong Hunslet

Leeds are already up to their Non-Fed limit of 7 with Fusitua, Austin, Sezer, Prior, Martin, Tetevano & Thompson so Flanagan Jnr wont be signing with them unless they release someone.

Question is would any other SL want to sign any of these if Leeds want rid ?? If they didn't then any 'pay-off' counts on the SC

Tetavano, Sezar, Thompson, should be packing their bags, for various reasons all not good enough, and at least one of those clearly does not want to play for Leeds.

But all under contract - doubt anyone else would want them on current performances

I’d agree with most of this but I don’t feel comfortable having Flanagan as head coach given his past. Assistant perhaps (doubt he’d want that though). Not sure Kyle is any better than Sezer tbh but Sezer’s heart doesn’t seem in it either from what I’ve seen.

Id like to see Danny Ward given the gig but for some reason top clubs are not seemingly making a move for him

Pay off will count plus how much space do Leeds have on their cap in general? When Agar started they managed to do some deals with non performing high earners so might be scope

They were strengthened all right. Bit too strong it turns out 😄

I think Leeds problems are far bigger than a coach. I think there is dressing room unrest and who ever the new coach is will have to crack some heads together.

The new coach who ever he is will have to be very strong

Flanagan picked at 7 for Dogs v Panthers. He hasn’t trained with the first team since mid last year and now Barrett is already on his 3rd halfback for round 5. The only out and out halfback in the club mind you.

Trent Barrett has a lot to answer for. I hope Flanagan gives it a good crack and can stay selected for Storm next week.

Eh? Pray tell - how would a stronger Hunslet save Leeds Rhinos? Or are you trying to conflate Leeds Rhinos current plight with a perceived demise in the game in and around Leeds?

Either way I'm interested to understand what wood in the trees I should be seeing?

Leeds will be fine, whoever, whatever. Nothing can go wrong. After all, they own their own ground 😀

The "Dark Ages" is a term referring to life at the RFL under the new regime. It's characterized by a decline in openness, professionalism, transparency and  achievements,
