Televised games next season - has it been sorted yet?

THE BBC has beaten Channel 4 to win rights to broadcast live Super League games for the next three years.

Mail Sport has revealed that the BBC has won rights that will see at least 12 matches each season shown live on BBC Two on Saturday evenings – starting from February.

Games will also be made available on the BBC iPlayer, whilst the BBC will cover two play-off games at the end of the season – much like Channel 4 did in 2022 and 2023 – as well as the World Club Challenge between Wigan Warriors and NRL premiers Penrith Panthers on 24 February.

Well that is excellent news. C4 have done a great job and improved coverage of the sport, to the extent that Sky have obviously copied elements of it, but the BBC should mean a bigger audience and Saturday evenings is a great slot.

Apparently the kick offs will be 17,30. Going off that, and the League Express fixture list the BBC games will be :-

Feb 17 Catalans v Warrington,                         Feb 24 Giants v St Helens                           Mar  2  Leeds v Catalans                            Mar  9 Catalans v Hull                               Mar 16 Catalans v Cas                               Mar 30 Salford v Leigh                              May  6  Leigh v Cas                                   May 11 Catalans v Leeds                          May 25 Catalans v Warrington                 June 1  Hull KR v Leigh

But the Catalans home games might be their normal kick off times. Take say 4 of these out and you get the first tranche of 6 games to May 11, with the rest to be decided later in the season.

Ignoring the Catalan home games those are not exactly top tier choices tbh!

The Salford - Leigh game is Easter Saturday, think that will likely be on Sky as part of the so called Rivals Round.

Actually brilliant. Can't ever remember the BBC committing to covering a league that wasn't soccer like this, and to get the World Club Challenge on there as well is fantastic news.

If it was officially announced, then yes.

So do we think therefore this announcement is not 'official'? Maybe the BBC are busy today. Is this a bit odd? Still, great news on the face of it!

Massive news

BBC coverage on a main channel (BBC2?) pretty much the best we could dream of.....and they "outbid" Channel 4......as good as it gets if true

Regarding Sky copying bits of C4.....the only bit I can see is more.picth side presentation.....which I for one think is a great move.....really helps get the atmosphere across on telly much better than being sat in a box with scratched clear plastic for windows

Amazing , incredible ! The Daily Mail mentions Rugby League.

IMO 17.30 k.o. not ideal, would have preferred 19.30 after football finishes, for pub viewing hordes.

If it was official, Super League would be reporting it too. That's not to say it won't happen, just someone has leaked it to journalists for whatever reason.

Some of the "not top tier" games on CH4 were the best games shown on tv last season. The best teams don't always mean the best games.

Sure. But if this is an opportunity to showcase the sport having the first BBC game at a 2/3rds empty John Smith's Stadium is not the opening gambit I'd chose.

You might have thought this news would have made the BBC Sports RL page, nowt just now.

Presumably waiting until it's official.

Brilliant news if true. There needs to be a plan to capitalise on this - make sure that the BBC games come across as big events with good crowds and so on. If it's a multi-year deal, that's a great opportunity for clubs selling jersey sponsorships, advertising hoardings and so on.

Then it's down to Huddersfield to make sure it isn't. Hopefully.
