I bought a pack of 40 assorted size watch batteries from the pound shop some years ago. They had an expiry date of 2011 and now some of them are not working.

Unfortunatey I cannot find the receipt. If i does turn up it will be just my luck to be from  Poundworld not Poundland

The Oscar's acceptance speeches. Don't get me wrong, I think Olivia Colman is a fine actress and although I haven't seen her latest film I don't doubt she is worthy of the award. But her acceptance speech, as are most others, was toe curlining embarrassment personified. Have I lost my sense of humour, what were the audience laughing at? It was made worse by the BBC morning show presenters telling us how jolly and funny it all was.

I think Olivia Colman needs to sharpen up her acceptance speech act, the self deprecating embarrassed act is all well and good for a while but she's likely to be winning awards for years to come and she needs to get dignified and delighted.

I’d like to thank ... oh little old  me , here blah blah blah especially . News keep saying Coleman was a total shock but I thought most folk thought she was a cert . The wider argument about what ‘ the academy ‘ thinks are the best is another that gets debated every year

Twinings have discontinued their Turkish Apple Tea.

I know this is definitely a first world problem but I want them to bring it back immediately. I'm down to less than 25 tea bags.

Dropped our car off today for what I thought was a routine recall. I've now been advised I should able to have it back "in a few weeks".

As this is the Rant Thread...

We have only just got over "Children in Need", 2 weeks time it is "Red Nose Day", probably 2 months after that will be "Sports Relief", Then it will be a good cause, "Stand up to Cancer", "Music for Africa", "Save Widnes",or some such. God knows how many lottery draws each week.

It's no wonder the High Streets & pubs are closing down, we are giving all our money to telethons, and have nothing to spend on ourselves.

I’m getting fed up of “self-employed” people who are claiming HMRC are “bullying” them over tax recovery on scams.

I’ve seen it too many places where people who knew what they were doing was unethical and only legal if you squinted hard enough at the laws are now being asked for the tax money.

The scam, and it was a scam, was that in about 90% of the cases, contractors were paid to an off-shore agency (to avoid Corporation Tax issues) who then paid them via a “loan” that was NEVER asked for repayment.  The idea being that if you are getting a loan of money then it’s not income therefore can’t be taxed.  Clever, innit?  In the vast majority of the other 10% of cases, it’s a permutation of the 90% that has the same effects. It took the law a few years to work out how to close it down and they’re now going after the money based on “come on, you were getting paid and you thought you could pretend it was a loan to not pay tax?!”

Then you get those who claim “I didn’t know it was a scam, I just thought I was getting a great deal”.  Billhooks.  When you’re earning over £100k/year and paying less than 10% “tax” in fees to the offshore company then you’re either lying or are terminally thick if you thought it was an ethically honest scheme. The law is clear, when you submit a tax return you sign to say that you know exactly what you’re submitting.

Some are complaining now that HMRC may bankrupt them, I have little sympathy for them. They were earning good income and chose to scam the system and are now complaining they got caught.

On the issue of self employment, it ticks me off massively to see/hear self employed folk moaning about “working all the hours god sends for less than I got when I was employed”

Years ago when I was considering self employment I went on a great course run by the local business link. Amongst other things successful local businesses would come along and give us a tutorial. Roger Harvey of Harvey’s department store in Halifax stressed the need for a business plan, “AND PUT THIS IN CAPITALS” he said “PAY YOURSELVES A DECENT WAGE, WHY ARE YOU DOING IT OTHERWISE?”

So please spare the “Oh I work so hard for next to nothing” sob stories.

Or more precisely Shrove Tuesday and Easter Sunday. Does anyone under 30 in the UK know what Lent is? I'm in no way religious but let's stuff our fat faces with sugar and on one day and in a few weeks shovel our faces full of chocolate. What? In between? Give up something? Sod off. Nah we only want the gluttony bit of the olden days festival wot we don't understand.

I at least respect those who participate in Ramadan who can manage daylight hours without.

Bin men.

I have had to clear bushes at request of postman so bin was full.

Put my brown bin out. The bin men move the bins to edge of pavement as van arrives and then walk back up to empty them. I saw them do this with mine so thought all was ok.

Then I look later and they have forgotten to empty it!  No sticker on it to say refused to empty etc.

I have no room now for 2 weeks cutting.

they are prob well peeved off with you for calling them bin men, you have to call them the refuse management and disposal unit nowadays.

I wrote to complain and I did get a nice apology.

Unfortunately the advice was to return my bin to the garden and out it out again in 2 weeks ☺

Our neighbour’s bin was missed this week, the council sent round a separate van to empty it. Every council does it differently.  It’d be nice if we could just get a single consistent standard for simple things like emptying bins...

And what should go into each bin, even what councils will accept as recycling varies.

Is it not contracted out? If it was, the contractor should pick up the cost of errors, not the council.

Something that should be so easy as emptying your bins is so blooming complex and convoluted
