Inspired by a post on the maps thread.

What job* would you have wanted, if you could reset time?  Maybe a Job you didn't know existed?  A job you didn't do the right exams for?  A job life now wouldn't allow?

Mine would have probably been the British Antarctic Survey, had no real awareness of what they did, by the time I knew I wouldn't have passed the medical!

*astronaut, fighter pilot, etc are a given.

With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

I’d definitely would have gone into sports analysis- the analysis I do on a daily basis is dull - would much rather transfer that skill set to something a bit more interesting

A dresser at the Moulin Rouge in Paris.

£100 an hour

.but that's all I can afford to pay them.

On a more frivolous note, I'd like to run a big band Basie-style.

Something to do with construction or maintenance. A Quantity Surveyor perhaps, or some sort of engineer.

What area of history would you specialise in?

The Anglo Saxon period - between the end of the Roman occupation and the Norman invasion.

How about you, with your archaeology?

The Middle Ages, particularly the Plantagenet period. More specifically the lives of the everyday man, so digging lost villages and farms, that sort of thing as opposed to digging military and royal sites.

I wish I was the guy at IMG with the job of " re- imagining RL" and turning it into a mega sport. However some lucky s*d already has that.

As a kid I actually wanted to be a bus driver, never happened,  failed my driving test numerous times and gave up.

I have three friends who work as archaeologists. They've all worked on interesting things at different points in their careers, but it's poorly paid, lots of paperwork, plenty of politics and plenty of routine day to day stuff. Not so different to many other jobs I suppose. I reckon there's a lot to be said to having a 'proper' job and being a volunteer on archaeological digs in your free time.

Also know a couple of people who worked for the British Antarctic survey, as they're based in Cambridge (and I used to know a woman who worked as an engineer on one of the US antarctic bases). They've all been really positive about the experience, although it's supposedly a bit like living on a submarine for 6 months.

If you'd asked 12 year old (or 18 year old) me what I wanted to do, it's pretty much what I ended up doing, and I'd probably make the same choice if I had my time again. Astronomer, Botanist or maybe something biotech related or perhaps spacecraft engineering would all be pretty interesting though.

A lighthouse keeper, although I'd probably be bored of it after a few days. I think my view of how good it would be and what it would actually involve, doesn't really fit with reality.

I kind of imagine doing it with a few friends living there, internet access, sitting around having a drink/smoke, a takeaway, a game of darts and pool/snooker, listening to music and watching the sea, while the light does its own thing upstairs and no maintenance is ever required.

Growing up and always living near the sea, I just think they look cool. I always used to build lighthouses when playing Minecraft.

Maybe a train driver, but in the days of steam. That would probably be quite lonely too though.

Having heard today what he was being paid, I'd've liked Huw Edwards job, but without the extra-curricular photographic interests. I mean, the best part of half-a-mil a year! I can read aloud, gissa job!

You'll have to settle for  photographer of top shelf magazines, providing the newsagent doesn't mind.

My undergraduate degree is in Ancient History and Archaeology, and it wasn't something I ever considered as a career. The idea of digging up amazing interesting things is sadly rarely the case. I enjoyed my couple of weeks actually doing some archaeology (I dug up an 800 year old goat skeleton), but I think it would get boring pretty quickly.

Likewise with history, I have friends who have gone further and in my experience you end up specialising in a niche area that nobody cares about. No lie, one of my tutors was an expert in loom stones.

The essential problem I've always had is that I didn't know what I wanted to do even as a dream job. I was a singer until about 20, but didn't even really want to be famous. I like the idea of something in music without the nerves/stress of performance.

Also sport. I'd love a job where I would be in shape just by doing the job.

I should have said 'ignoring rubbish pay'.  The BAS don't pay well, but you get 6 months tax free with free food and lodgings i suppose!
