I'm not sure 3 days of work per year qualifies as a career.

True. But if that's all you can get in St. Helens, you should take it

Barrie Ledger former Saints winger used to be a postman (don’t know if he still is). Despite the stick he used to get from Saints fans he was one of my heroes at when i were a lad.
Paul Loughlin works at NGF-Pilks, used to do a bit of goalkeeping at Garswood Utd.

Josh Charnley is a qualified bricklayer, he works on the sites in the off-season.

Chris Hill runs his own plumbing business outside of RL.

I find that very hard to believe. I seriously doubt a contracted player would be allowed to do a physical job on the side, come off it.

Being an investor or director in a business like Hill I do accept, but not a brick layer working on site. No Trinity full time players have a second job as such, and I doubt many earn what Charnley does. But hey it’s a crazy world.

A little 'off topic' but I remember being a star struck teenager delivering the Warrington Mid-Week Guardian on a paper round, when all of a sudden, Bob Jackson jumped out of the bin man truck and asked me for a newspaper. He was playing for Warrington at that time in the early 90's!

Of course, he got a copy of the Guradian.

Also remember Kevin Tamati, after his career picking us up in a taxi after a night in Mr Smiths.

Legends, the both of them

2 great wire players right there mate. 👏👏

All these things show exactly why it is not worth it to risk everything in this sport with injuries and longer term conditions.

A career after the sport is not a consideration, it's a necessity.

These players don't get enough for what they do!

Very good idea mingling with ex players.

You believe what you like. I know it’s true. Charnley works for Brookhouse Contracting.

A couple of days ago I walked past a house with some building work going on and one of the builders was the absolute spitting image of Danny Houghton.

Whether it was him I don't know because I don't know what he is doing post retirement but it got me wondering what other retired players are doing now? So do you know what a retired player is doing now?

I did some work a couple of years ago in a property on Kingswood for a couple who were renting their house from Danny. So perhaps he was overseeing some work he was having done on another property he owns.

Anyone know what Richie Myler is doing now?

I said I believed the Chris Hill one. The  Charnley one sounds like a story for the press. Working on building sites is the most dangerous work activity there is.

The whole point of being a pro player was to move players away from working down the pit. Working on site would almost certainly invalidate his insurances.
Whatever he’s doing I personally don’t believe he’s a paid contracted bricklayer. I do believe he will be fairly soon.

As an aside. Reece Lyne and Joe Arundel went part time after leaving Wakefield to sell cars. They had to as Trinity wanted them full time. Selling cars is not even remotely physical.

Danny Houghton set up his own business some time ago according to the interview he did with the HDM when he retired from playing. Didn't specify what it was though.

Matt Diskin has done very well for himself since he retired from RL. He built up a very sizeable property portfolio, mainly in the student let market, which he consolidated into a single property management business which he then sold for a very substantial sum. He now runs his own financial investment company providing capital for other businesses.

And the majority of RL players continue to hold down regular jobs throughout the year, of course.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.

When i had a short spell working on the building site 17/18 years old we had Alan Bates, Barry Rushworth and John Taylor  all playing for Dewsbury working on the site plus a light weight second row forward called Stafford who played for Bramley. He was very quiet a plasterers labourer but could tackle owt in front of him Happy days.
