The Greatest ever RL XIII

I am in my 30s so can only comment on players from the mid-80s onwards. So my team from the players I have seen live:

1. Slater 2. Robinson 3. Meninga 4. Inglis 5. Offiah 6. Lockyer 7. Thurston

8. Webcke  9. C Smith 10. Civoniceva 11. Tallis 12. Gallen 13. Sculthorpe

Tallis, really, you can't think of better 2nd rowers than that in the best part of the last 40 years? 🤔

I can think of quite a few second rowers: Betts, P Clarke, Sironen, Boyd Cordner, even SBW. But I use to love watching Tallis hence why I've selected him.

How old do you have to be to have laughed at them.  I am 49 years old and I knew from the first time I saw them they terrible and hateful ########.

Again it down to personal opinions. I don't like today's comedians who swear - but apparently some people think to use such language (or hint at it) is OK.

Not sure about 5, 7 or 12 but like many of your selections.

Whole thing is subjective bit of fun anyway.

I think a lot comes down to personnel choice I’m happy I wouldn’t change most of that team unless there’s someone obvious I’ve forgot. I think the players that I’m not 100% committed to and could easily of selected some else are 10,11 and twelve

This is my ' if I was playing against them I would ###### myself if it kicked off' XIII.  I can't think who I should have at full back,  hooker and one wing though.

2. Des Drummond

3. Dean Bell

4. Paul Cullen

5.

6. Wally Lewis

7. Andy Gregory

8. Steve Bowden

9.

10. Jim Mills

11. Kurt Sorenson

12. Les Boyd

Platt Skerrett Crooks at 10?

Betta or Clarke at 12?

My personal choice would always be Sterling at 7.

Believe Murphy was a magnificent 7.

Think that’s the point I could name 10 props and 15 second rows with not a massive amount between them. Just felt Tallis at his best and watching Pearce on that tour left a bigger impression.

Opinions mate.

Certainly a handful on his day.

I would’ve picked him (Webcke) over Steve Roach but Roach could be a game changer by whatever means.

As you didn't see some of these play, can I ask what criteria you used for selection?

A mix of reading about them, their achievements and personal preference to how I like the way they played.

That's fair enough.

I love reading about the history of our sport and the players. But without seeing players for myself I couldn't say who was better.

Was Harold Wagstaff better than Dally Messenger, I really don't know.

I did actually consider Dally Messenger but although there is absolutely no doubt he is one the greatest ever players of both codes, he only actually played Rugby League for 5 years and only in 92 games.

Harold Wagstaffe played a total of 469 games and was pivotal in the great Huddersfield team of the early part of the 1900s.

EDIT ... Although longevity isn't a good enough reason in itself for choosing the better player I think Wagstaffe's overall knowledge and experience of how to play the game gives him my vote over Messenger

My fav centre of all time is Jamie lyon. So I'd have to get him in my team

My favourite team would be very different to the one I’ve picked.

I really struggle with this stuff. Weights, conditioning (and lack of), defence structures, coaching, sports science, part-time, full-time make it really difficult for me to make comparisons. The only players who would be there for certain in my eyes are Martin Offiah, Cameron Smith and Wally Lewis. The big forwards are harder to judge for the reasons mentioned earlier.

1 Graeme Langlands. 2 Billy Boston, 3 Mal Meninga, 4 Reg Gasnier, 5 Brian Bevan, 6 Wally Lewis, 7 Andrew Johns. 8 Arthur Beetson, Cameron Smith, Brian McTigue, Gordon Tallis, Bill Ashurst, Mal Reilly.

Tempting to put Jim Sullivan at 1 and Offiah at 5. Haven't as that would be taking my Wigan bias too far. So only gone for players I've seen. That first series Langlands came over (1963 I think) he was superb, the best full back display I've still ever seen. I think those are the best players I've ever seen in their respective positions play our game.

You need Les Davidson in there.

"Bundy" knew how look after things.
