Fan Behaviour

Three clubs have been fined this week for fan misbehaviour. Saints should receive a fine too after a succession of incidents last night.

The issue with pyrotechnics seems to be getting worse in RL and football. Football also contending with mass pitch invasions and players / coaches being attacked this week.

Seems to be an uptick in incidents at present. Not sure of the reason why, but we need to get a grip of it.

St Helens fans apparently throwing pints at Warrington players last night (more brass than sense!) And a flare was chucked by Saints fans into another group of saints fans with some suggestion of injury too.

Flares popping up more and more, they can be good but they need to be in a controlled and planned environment.

There's an outright ban on bringing flares into any football / rugby stadia in the country. Last time fans brought some into Saints ground the club introduced extra stewards and bag checks to try and stop it and at some games even brought in a specialist sniffer dog to try and catch fans concealing them on themselves to smuggle them in.

I suspect it may be both Saints & Wire may get fines for last nights incident. Saints because its their fans who brought it and Wire for their stewards not preventing a banned item from being brought into the ground and for not intervening & apprehending the culprit on the night. 

Either way its sad for the game

The check policy at Warrington is a joke, they check handbags but flares are usually tucked in socks, so all the women who carry handbags get extra scrutiny symptoms of having a policy to show you are doing something when you know that policy has zero chance of catching the real culprits.

So what is happening at Cas seeing all the incidents seem to involve their fans?

Hope they don't look at removing the standing fan areas.

Cas weren't playing last night and we had a bottle thrown at a Saints player, a pint thrown at a Warrington player and two flares chucked on the pitch from Saints fans. Needs sorting before someone gets seriously hurt.

Closing stands/restricting capacity may be extreme, but something needs to be done to stop this before someone gets hurt and we wonder why we didn't stop it.

They have a group of wannabee football hooligans/stone island wearers/drunken sniffed up chavs who decide to cause trouble at just about every game.

The same bunch who decided to abuse me and annoy two old women crossing the road in Huddersfield, if i'm right the same lot also let off flares at that game which is one of the ones the club have been punished for.

three smoke bombs in the saints end last night, including one that ended up on the pitch that was more fire than smoke, that had been chucked from the back of the stand, to further down and then chucked on the pitch.  Originated from the large group of lads not wearing colours that were stood en masse really noticeably about an hour before kick off, i've no doubt they'll have got quite clear cctv of them pre match.

All these idiots do is cost the clubs more money because they risk losing the safety certificate and have to then increase stewarding & policing.

They’re embarrassing but whenever this happens RL likes to mention it being a family game, and it’s not pwoper RL fans it’s those bloody football hooligans. Which is rubbish really, i have seen Saints fans plastered at matches and their language and behaviour is quite shocking. Nothing is done though because clubs are not going to turn away much needed cash if people want to buy ale. One advantage of standing up at Saints is not having to keep getting up out of your seat whilst Bob or Chantelle  go to the bar to get another round in. Although i do hate people who just push past you thinking you’re invisible. They haven’t got the time to say “excuse me can i just squeeze past please”. Perhaps clubs might have to start making fans drink their ale in the concourses.

it's young kids trying to emulate whats going on in crowds at football, which you can see on twitter and fb as they regularly tell anyone not in favour to grow up, its just a bit of smoke.

We've had it at warrington, so much so that they've taped the back section of the south stand, from the 30 metre line, so they can get behind and keep an eye, the black trackies and coat brigade have spread out now, annoying everyone else around, these are the same types i was referring to  in the saints end last night.

That incident/s hasn't yet been investigated, the fines related to other games and I commented on those fined.

Heard a good debate last night on 5 Live which was asking how the rise in social cocaine use when drinking could be affecting the crowds downturn in behaviour at football. I'd say we can draw strong parallels with RL fans too. At least on the face of it at football there's always a decent police presence and stewards - RL often feels unsafe because when an incident does occur it's often allowed to go on for way longer than it should due to little to no security/policing.

I literally cannot think of a good thing about them in any way. Cringy and dangerous.

And once it is controlled and planned, all the danger and edginess is gone and they move on to a new trend. I said years ago that was the way of stamping it out. Indeed, the criminalisation of the smoke bombs is half of the reason they’re lobbed on to the pitch to avoid being caught holding one (even though they can quite literally leave you red handed)

When in Toronto watching Leigh (not a true RL fan though according to another thread), I went to the Toronto FC v New York Red Bulls game and they have ‘pyro time’ at 15-20 minute intervals with some guy stood on a platform miles away from everyone else, holding a smoke canister and thinking he’s the capo at Napoli. Reality is that it looked so lame it was untrue and would kill the trend stone dead over here.

It's absolutely everywhere and it's not just yoofs either. 

A sure fire way to get a bunch of blokes acting like total bellends is to fill them full of sniff.

I've seen the tifos with flares etc in European football and must say they are good to look at and could have a place. Often these are coordinated and planned displays however, not the random popping of coloured smoke seen at RL and Football grounds recently.

Sadly, it's the majority of fans that will suffer for the actions of a tiny minority of offenders, as most of the obvious preventative actions would apply across the board. 

In my view,though, any suggestion of accomodating flare throwing though "pyro time" sessions for example, should be dismissed out of hand. Flares do not have ANY place in our sport. ..unless they are inserted and ignited in the backsides of offending miscreants.
