Where would your priorities lie

Recommended Posts

I was reading on the Barrow forum that the Featherstone following at Barrow could well be affected by Leeds Utd playing.  Now personally it wouldn't enter my head to miss my own club playing so that I could watch football, be that on TV or someone offering me a ticket. So I wondered, how many on here if given the option would take football before rugby league?

Just because you think everyone hates you doesn't mean they don't.

I mean, the scenario matters. If you were a Fev fan AND a Leeds fan - and people on here seem to think there's a fair few of those (and Cas and Leeds etc) - then given the choice of traveling to Barrow  for a regular league game or watching Leeds in the Championship playoff final I can see why they'd choose the latter. I'd probably do the same in their case.

I can’t abide soccer, I really couldn’t give a toss about FC Halifax Town’s results

I used the Barrow, Fev analogy because of what I read. To keep it simple would you prioritise a football game over a rugby league game?

Football bores me to tears, easily the most corrupt sport on the planet and most games spent with hardly any proper action. My only options when it comes to sport are do I watch Fax or do I watch an amateur Rugby League game and other than SL games on TV I can't remember the last time I watched a full game of any other sport.

Just looked up the fixture list for July. If England soccer national team get to QFs of Euros then July 5th and 6th will see some SL fixture clashes, so some fans of both sports might have to prioritise.

Quite a common occurrence in my circle of family & friends.

Pretty simple really, it all comes down to the importance of the relative games and overall circumstances. A rule of thumb is that football take priority in the spring, RL in the late summer and autumn.

I only missed 6 Bolton Wanderers games (home and away) all season in all competitions, but one of the five missed away games was to go to the Challenge Cup Final rather than Cheltenham v BWFC. However, my wife and I missed Leigh v Leeds and Leigh v Catalans as we were already in Exeter and Peterborough respectively ahead of the Bolton game the following day (not a chance I was travelling down to Exeter on the day, and Peterborough as an early kick off so it made sense to travel the previous evening).

Similarly, one of our group at Wembley last weekend prioritised the play off final over the Wigan v Hull KR semi. Another of our party was pleased he was able to do both the play off final and still cheer on Huddersfield v Warrington on the Sunday. Fair to say he didn’t have a great weekend!

I'm a Leeds United fan and so was faced with this dilemma on Sunday.

The Leeds game was obviously huge in terms of the club's history and future success and to not go meant that I was missing out on the conclusion of a long season where I'd attended most home fixtures. I would also be 'letting down' my oldest friend who I go to games with.

The Hurricanes game was sponsored by the supporters club - I'm deputy admin - and this had been arranged many weeks ago. To not go to the Alex would have meant letting down more people and missing the chance of finally beating North Wales Crusaders.

Partly due to the hassle of arranging tickets and travel for Wembley, I went to the Hurricanes game and I'm very much glad I did!

Every year there are overlapping priorities and it's a decision I have to make on each occasion. Usually there is a separate factor that pushes me to one sport over the other.

Summed up perfectly.

He's always miserable anyway 🙂

This season if I had a ticket to watch paint dry I'd probably choose that over going to a Hull game.

In all seriousness though, I don't care much about football. I take a passing interest at best. If I had to opportunity to, for example, go to a test match, or an NFL game at Tottenham, or some similarly big event, then I'd have a tough decision to make. But even then if it was an important game for Hull I'd still probably choose that.

As an Arsenal fan living in St Helens, if I prioritised football I'd have to make a 400 mile round trip and sell all my worldly possessions to secure a ticket. Even though they very rarely clash, I still choose to save myself financial turmoil and watch Arsenal matches from home.

When in buisness,  a business associate of mine had a private box at Old Trafford - the football one - and the number of times he asked me to be his guest for a pre game meal and after game functions with transport provided was quite a few, the trouble was they were invariably on a Saturday afternoon when I would be at a RL Conferance game, I would always make some excuse to not go to the football but I wouldn't have insulted him by telling him the truth that it didn't interest me at all.

As a Rhinos season ticket holder for last 17 years I would choose watching my next door neighbours youngest daughters under 8s football match over going to headingley to watch the embarrassment offered by Rohan Smiths coaching

Id book a complete set of root canals before Id watch Manly. Watching football is only slightly above the root canals option.

For football, the thought wouldn't cross my mind. As a Fev season ticket holder, I do however miss games due to other commitments, mainly being part of a marshalling team at Mallory Park. I'll pick and choose at times with things based on the level of interest I have with the opposition, and the game in general. Sometimes I'll miss marshalling, sometimes I'll miss the game.

Just out of curiosity does anyone black out certain dates in their calendar, e.g. GF and CC final, at the start of the season just in case or is it just me? Personally, I only attend finals if my team is in it but I never want to get caught out.

I can understand it where you have towns/cities that have both a professional football team and a rugby league club.

I can't stand football myself but I know plenty of people who go to both and I get it how people want to support their local team, whatever the sport.
