Replacing Brett Hodgson at Hull FC, we have a load of spare cash to entice him…

A fair few digs there. If you are going to make such big statements its an awfully odd time to do it when there is still 3/4 of the season to go and when it will potentially affect performance going forward.

Yes but recruiting starts on 1st May or at least when you can officially approach players at other clubs

That's a genuinely shocking statement from someone who is careful with what he says. Can't recall him ever having a dig at anyone internally at the clubs he's left before (he had a mild go at Leeds fans after his last Headingley home game but taking the dirty laundry out in public is unprecedented).

KR fans must be gutted.

Obviously a roles & responsibilities clash with Paul Lakin, seems very clear with that interview. Presumably either around list management at the elite end, or perhaps involvement in junior development at the other.

There’s wrongs at both ends of this for me though, Tony doesn’t come out of it smelling like roses either…

Firstly, from the club it’s a failure of leadership to not be able to nuance somebody’s role, or deal with a specific disagreement well enough, to enable them to remain highly engaged. Not great at all.

But on the flipside, for Smith to unilaterally announce it off the cuff like this (clear from the lack of an immediate club statement), and to provide such unnecessary personal detail, is unprofessional in the extreme. I’d expect better from an inexperienced coach, let alone someone with his experience. In time I think he’ll realise he’s really let himself down there.

I liked Smith, gutted he’s leaving, but it’s the club I support and the general direction of travel that I care about not the bumps on the road. Continuity would be better, with a well managed succession, so Danny Maguire for me - and the sooner that’s mapped out the better.

We don’t need a new direction, we need to keep moving in this one.

Apparently this site says I "won the day" here on 23rd Jan, 19th Jan, 9th Jan also 13th December, whatever any of that means. Anyway, 4 times in a few weeks? The forum must be going to the dogs - you people need to seriously up your game. Where's Dutoni when you need him?

Ouch! Smith isn't holding back on his feelings - will he stay until the end of the season? Also timing wise just as Leeds are about to announce his nephew as Head Coach.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him leave sooner rather than later and reappear in a DOR role at Headingley.

Not anymore?

No, not really to be honest. To misquote Shakespeare I think “nothing becomes a man more than the manner of his leaving”

I’ve worked with people who’ve done that sort of thing, and I’ve no time for it. It’s snidey - regardless of root cause and how right you may be, it’s the job of a professional to value the recent past when it’s come to an end, and to leave as constructively as possible because what’s ultimately important is what you leave behind.

Very disappointed in him to be honest, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he himself doesn’t eventually regret how he’s gone about it.

I must sense things others don't because TS leaving doesn't shock me in the slightest. I've felt all season this is likely to be the last.

The whole situation should have been handled a lot better, as it is widely accepted both CEO and Coach clash, but I am honestly not that bothered.

Thanks to Tony for his contribution but no one individual is bigger than the club.

My tip is Danny Mag for the top role.

Apart from Brad Takairangi obviously?
