  1. I wonder why the simple expedient of a fixture reversal wasn't taken, even at this late stage. Dewsbury do own their own ground so nobody to placate other than disgruntled fans.

  4. What a wonderfully entertaining game of Rugby League that was today....Most enjoyable so far...The young guns of Wigan were a pleasure to watch, enthusiastic, full on committed, lots of talent on show and I started to think that we were going to be second best, and in the first half , at times we were....but the second half the game plan changed the experience shone through and a Ridyard masterclass of kicking plus some superb work by the right hand side offence and Oldham were out of sight...It looked fiercely contested and those young Wigan Lads didnt drop off or give an inch 4 man tackles full on ball returns it was a test indeed for the Roughyeds team as a whole for the game flowed as the young Lady ref had what I consider a fine game ( It may have been her debut) I have to say it but a day like today whets my appetite for all thats good about RL was on show. https://wiganwarriors.com/blog/2023/02/12/valiant-warriors-lose-to-roughyeds/ Wigan Academy 22 Oldham RLFC 40

  6. Well, that was good wasn't it? Perhaps a bit disappointing that we let them through for some late tries at the end of the second half, as it made the score line look a bit more even, but for an hour we were totally dominant against a team that's expected to end up in the top 4. We made metres every time we got the ball and they only did so late in the game when they were 30 points down and the contest was long since over. We've probably had bigger wins over Halifax but I can't remember us being so much the better team from an early stage. They got a fair few decisions in their favour in the first half but that period when they had three sets on our line but didn't look like scoring told a story. Very early days and promotion is won in October not February but we certainly look poised for a strong season.

  7. Don't think anyone predicted a Swinton win. Be great to see them stay up.

  8. You are correct; it did happen last year too. The WRU are the big money investors in the ground, the infrastructure and the union team that plays there regularly. We've already had our fixtures changed due to ground improvements after the union season finishes, but this was entirely predictable. The rugby union u20s six nations games are known well in advance. I'm sure the stadium management could have given notice when the League 1 fixtures were announced and the Dewsbury fixture could have been reversed months ago.

  14. New faces that put a tenner into the club probably won't be doing it again. When Meadows kept breaking the line all he had to do was pass it to jc and we would have been out of reach. Long time since I have seen us so un interested. Who'd have thought we were in the million pound game last season. Carry on playing like that and we are going to get some tonkings.

  15. To be fair it is always going to be a slog... Other teams have really spent and strengthened, and we know we can't do as well on that front as we'd like, but we should be winning games like this. I fear if we lose the next couple of games it's going to be struggle all year.

  17. The only union international fixture I can find reference to in Colwyn Bay around that time is an U20 match v England five days after the North Wales v Dewsbury match. Are there other age groups that week too that are having an impact or do the WRU get to veto NW playing five days before them? I recall this happening last year too. I know that their options are limited, but NW don't seem to have the best deal when it comes to other tenants being able to stop them playing at their home ground.

  19. Given the genuine issues raised here, the continued silence of the Town Board is plainly unacceptable. I am a big supporter of a new stadium and want to know from the Town reps on the joint steering group what they intend to do to help resolve the concerns. My big fear is that even stage 1 gets bogged down in wrangling and the funding is lost so we miss this once in a lifetime opportunity for future generations, because one thing is certain, as the country is in such a state after 13 years of the current shower, there'll be no future money coming our way for a new stadium.

  25. Says a lot about the state of the game when 3 clubs can't even be arsed to send someone to the season launch. Stuff like this really annoys me and is a perfect example of why I've become disillusioned with the game. People can't even get the basics right. What message does this send out to sponsors and would be investors into the sport. Not only that when IMG look at the state of the sport it really won't be surprising when they ask what value does league 1 offer.

  26. The difference between the two sides was glaringly visible. We like to barge up the middle, hoping to break through a bigger pack, without success of course and we hardly string two passes together. Conversely, Huddersfield, as soon as they have ball in hand send out quick sharp and sometimes deep passes to draw in the defence with the next pass sending a player through the large gap. The Giants scored three tries within 15 minutes and we hadn’t even handled the ball at that point. First time we got the ball we won a penalty and almost immediately messed up. As you can tell by the score, Huddersfield’s first team scored at will with their enterprising rugby; it was good to watch, save for those forward passes, so crucial in SL, it would seem. We had to drop out (more than once) and collected a short kick, only to knock on and for the home side to pick up and score. Almost as soon as soon as Ferguson came on we scored. He got right to the line before being tackled and from the ptb, out went the pass and Turner was on hand to touch down by the posts. Our second, if I recall correctly, came from a penalty. From the tap we made good ground and Garside went in at the corner with Collins converting. The plus points from the match: we scored as many points in the second half as in the first; Huddersfield didn’t! Our goal kicking was 100% effective; Huddersfield were nowhere near that performance! On the debit side: there was such a clear difference with the way each team played, as mentioned above. Okay, Ch1 sides probably won’t play the same way as the Giants, but we must play a more open game if we are to achieve promotion. I didn’t notice Ferguson leave the field and injured. ADDENDUM: I have just listened to Liam’s after match interview and he seemed annoyed, suggesting that he thought we would be playing Huddersfield’s second string, “not what we signed up for” were some of his words.

  32. Just an update on the voting and shares question I raised via the csv website and subsequent answer that I received that everything was 50/50 between the reds and town. Quite remarkably this info has now been updated on companies house to reflect that in a matter of days. Hopefully all other questions and queries are dealt with in the same quick manner. Just on the town board and selling the lease on Derwent park to fund the new stadium, the value attributed to the lease in towns accounts is approx £370000, a drop in the ocean I would have thought for what is required and a huge step to take should there be any issues in the new stadium progressing. I’m not sure when would be a good time to consider selling that, but with so much still to be decided, even on stage 1, I wouldn’t think now would be a good time to be doing that or even considering it until further down the line. At the moment no one knows what is likely to happen and to sell before any definite plans are put forward does not seem sensible to me.

  33. I dont for one minute think Steve is slagging the supporters of and that’s a bit harsh to say so. Surely his statement means that there has been a poor response to purchasing season tickets which is part of the lifeblood of ours and all other clubs. The board and backroom staff have done a sterling job in getting a team out on the park and we, as supporters, should be backing the club accordingly. There is also no need to buy platinum season tickets if do not wish but if you look carefully a standard season ticket is also available costing £150 on the website as I have just purchased a couple.

  34. I agree the BOD need to address this and give people who have spent thousands of pounds supporting the club some reassurances they are not allowing the club to be sold down the river and actually have had a say in all this. I fully understand and support the principle of the new stadium, but I don't support moving into a polished tuurrd, with little prospect of the remaining phases being realised. The reds must think all their Christmas' have came at once, they get a new pitch, a new stand, a training pitch for all their various teams to play on, and they get to halve future expenses and maintenance costs.

  35. I’ll be buying one although I haven’t got one yet. From a financial point of view buying a season ticket doesn’t make any sense to me because being away on holiday for August means I’ll miss several home games. However I figure the club needs the money more than I do. To paraphrase JFK - “ Ask not what the club can do for you but what you can do the club “.

  36. Just back from a busy Elmpark Way, where Heworth set up a second round trip to League One semi-pros Hunslet by beating National Conference League First Division rivals Oulton Raiders 22-6. Fairly comprehensive, in the end. The Villagers, more of a threat going forward, took their chances very well. When they had to defend, which they did in the last 15 minutes or so in each half, Heworth tackled with determination. Too many errors, though, from Oulton. Still, it's a first competitive runout for everyone. Heworth scored tries in the 19th (converted) and 27th minutes to lead 10-6 at half-time. Oulton replied with a 24th-minute unconverted try and, in front of the posts, a 39th-minute penalty. After the break, Heworth added converted tries in the 41st and 66th minutes. Decent crowd - about 350, I would say. Admission was £2.50, with a 16-page programme available for a quid.

  39. Fully agree with your last paragraph Alan, it is the collective things that seasoned NRL players are accustomed to doing week in week out that SL doesn't quite reach that will be the telling difference next week, and especially when it is against a Penrith side that has proved to be better that all it's domestic opposition in the *last couple of seasons, they may have lost a few games on the journey but when it matters they know how to win. *Yes I know Saints have done this also, but in my opinion the standards of the two comps are markedly different.

Las Vegas Islanders 40 - Provo Steelers 44 The match was much closer than I was expecting it to be with the Steelers looking like they might run away with it at the start but the Las Vegas side staying in touch and finishing strongly. 45. TO finally converted a try! Brochon did OK, scored a try and then was promoted to goal kicker and didn't miss one. An odd game though after the speed of the first game against Barrow it all seemed a bit flat tonight, they didn't seem to get out of 2nd gear for most of the match. A small crowd didn't help, holidays/freezing cold/French match on TV might have been a cause but I hope the numbers pick up as it was poor tonight. Sita's entrance was fun. Although he wasn't on the pitch for very long. York are next, one of the only championship teams to have already played at the Stade.
